Interactions With Children

Establishes and communicates (clear) limits for acceptable behavior.

  1. Student Guidance
  2. Staff Setting Limits
  3. Team Collaboration
  4. RULES & DISCIPLINE
  5.   All the basic “school rules” apply to this program, even during the summer.
The staff and supervisors will handle discipline in a fair and respectful manner.  Staff need to be consistent and communicate any warnings with their staff team.  All staff needs to keep the Site Leader informed so he/she can look at accumulating issues during the day or the week.   These steps will be used:
Verbally request the student to discontinue the inappropriate behavior and remind him/her of the correct behavior.  Allow to continue participating in activity.
Second incident with same student – not necessarily the same behavior:  ask the student to take a Time Out in the area you are supervising.  While he/she is there, confirm that he/she is aware of the rule they have broken and question them as to how he/she will do this differently in the future.  This Time Out should be Short!!  Allow child to continue the activity.
Same student with same/different behavior:  Fill out an Incident report.

Addresses behaviors or situations, rather than labeling the child or youth.

Build a trusting relationship with children and youth, providing physical and emotional security.

  1. Get students involved.
  2. Call students by name; make a real effort to learn their names.

Understand how the environment (i.e., space, room arrangement, work climate, daily routines, and schedules) affects the behavior of children, youth, and staff and adapts the environment and curriculum to minimize potential challenging behaviors.

  1. Help keep all rooms and hallways neat and organized.

Act as a positive role model.

Model good behavior. Students learn from the staff. Be positive.
