Missoula Tournament June 28 - 29 2014

Missoula 60s tournament:

 003.JPG

Huff and Puffs had a 4 and 1 record in the Missoula tournament and came away with the silver medal. After a slow start losing to Spokane 10/7, we reeled off 4 straight wins. Bats finally woke up in the 7th inning of our second game and carried on through the rest of the tournament.  Had some base running antics from Tim Sietz, who had the fans shaking their heads., saying, “WHAT THE HELL IS HE DOING”? He almost turned a single into a inside the park home run or 3 outs and settled on second. There were 5 homeruns hit by the 60s in the tournament and could of been 6 if Derry didn’t turn a home run into a triple, (no wheels)!! I should of been running for him. Thanks goes out to our pickups  players to Jim Black who was fantastic at first; Howard Gehring,  who also wouldn’t let a little dog poop stop him from making a play and also left the sheep alone in right field. Larry Savage also contributed with  his fine pitching and catching and also stopped a bench clearing brawl by not walking Tonto. Dennis Dulle and his acrobatic catches and his inside the park hr. He could of stayed at third like Ersemen but he went for it. Tim Seitz and fantastic base running and finally Jamie White and the plow, (also hit an inside the park HR). SO THERE!! He played very well at 3rd. Thanks to our young pickups also. The two Jim’s – Fink and Larson, pitched excellent and were very steady with the bat, except the Halo rule hurt Jim Fink bad. He tried to decapitate the pitcher a few times.

Lots of aches and pains through the tournament but Budweiser anti inflammatory bottles seemed to ease it. Randy Biko hit 2 HR’s over the fence, Dery hit one dinger that he didn’t have to run as hard on, and Larry Biko isn’t just another pretty face out there you know!!! He is a good coach as well. It was good times and good fellowship with the 60’s. See you this weekend at our tournament.

Saturday’s Hi-Lites Team 65

Game 1 vs Bosie, Idaho

They were a good hitting team, it was a seesaw back and forth with MH losing 17-16.  Trailing by 6 runs batting in the bottom of the 6th (open inning) MH fought back to come within one run. A real good game on the part of both teams, that saw some good hitting by Stan Aberle with 3 triples.   Bob also went 3 for 3, Gord D,  Rod, Warren, Ray, Gord M and Dee all going 2 for 3.  Fun game to play.

 Game 2 vs Yeagers

The second game saw another real barn burner with Yeagers Sports from Bellingham Washington squeaking out an 11 to 10 victory.  Yeagers jumped off to a 10 run lead only to have the Huff & Puffs fight back with 9 runs by the end of the 3rd.  It was a defensive battle after that until Yeagers scored one in the bottom of the 6th and the huff & Puffs managed only one in the top of the 7th for another one run loss.  Jim, Warren, Dee and Stan all had 2 hits.

 Game 3 vs Great Falls

The third game saw the Huff & Puffs on the win wagon with a 14-13 victory over the Great Falls OPI's.  The Huff & Puffs jumped to an 8-1 lead in the first 3 innings but the Great Falls guys would not go away and came back to take a one run lead after 5.  After the OPI's batting in the top of the 7th the game was tied at 13.  In the bottom of 7,  a double by Warren, a walk to Ray and a strong single by Ernie gave the Huff & Puffs the win.

Highlights on the offensive side saw Sherwin log 3 hits while Jim, Rod, Steve, Bob, Gord M. and Dee got 2 each.

The 60+ MH team had a good day as well with 2 wins and 1 loss.

Game 4  vs The Drifters - MH  13 - Drifters 12

Hi Sports Fans, welcome to the second installment of my report on the 65+  Missoula Tournament.  The 9 am game today saw MH face off against their old nemesis, the "Drifters".  The Huff & Puffs started quickly and umped out to an 8-1 lead after three innings.  The Drifters then shifted into gear and fought their way back into the game.  Our boys took a two run lead in the top of the seventh and held the opposition to just one run in the bottom for our fourth one run game in a row.

Gord D. Rod, Warren and Sherwin all collected three hits with Stan adding two more triples to his weekend barrage.

Game 5 vs Big Sky  11:50 a.m.  MH 15 - Big Sky 4

In the last game of the tourney our boys went up against the Big Sky Tavern from Spokane.  The Huff & Puffs had their bats going and the defence playing very tight.  Big guns for this game had Jim and Rod with 4 hits each, while Warren, Ernie, Sherwin and Gord M. collected 3 each.  Ernie pitched both games of the day and did an admirable job.  MH finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.

Our congratulations go out to the 60+ Huff & Puffs on completing a 4-1 record for the weekend.
