You’ve probably heard about YouTube and Facebook now being completely open for LISD staff. We’re excited too!

There are however, specific expectations for the use of YouTube and Facebook you must be familiar with, so please read everything below, including some relevant excerpts from the Employee Handbook and the Employee Responsible Use Policy below.

of YouTube & Facebook

1. Preview all videos you plan on sharing with students in their entirety before showing them to students.  Don’t rely on a title or the first few minutes in determining school-appropriateness.

2. Use ViewPure when showing YouTube videos to students in a whole group instruction scenario. All the potentially inappropriate ads and associated videos surrounding YouTube videos are stripped out when using ViewPure, so students will see only what you want them to.  Using ViewPure is as simple as copying and pasting a YouTube link into and clicking on the “safe link” they provide to view the video. 3. Don’t play videos others could find offensive. All it takes is one student, teacher or administrator thinking the video is inappropriate to create problems.  If in doubt, don’t play it!  See the Use of Electronic Media for Classroom Instruction section of the  Employee Handbook and the Employee Responsible Use Policy you’ve signed off on if you have questions,  or ask your administrators or Curriculum if you need guidance.

4. Avoid excessive YouTube video playback. Use common sense as we must always be conscious of bandwidth usage.  If all the students are going to watch the same video, don’t have 30 different devices trying to download it and stream it at the same time.  Don’t play videos all day just because you can.  Don’t search for videos with students watching and waiting for you to find them....use your prep time to find the video, preview the video in its entirety, and plan out how you will use it as part of your instruction.  If you’re going to play the same video multiple times throughout the day, just rewind and pause it between classes so it won’t have to be cached or pulled down from the internet over and over again.

5. Do not download YouTube videos. As a district and as educators, it’s imperative we demonstrate digital citizenship skills and values to our students, and this includes respecting copyright law and terms of service agreements. As you can see below, YouTube explicitly states downloading is a no no, so please don’t do it!

6. Keep private separate from professional. If you want to use a YouTube channel, make sure it is separate from any personal YouTube channel you may have.

Lampasas ISD Expectations for Teacher Use of Facebook

1. Do not friend students.  Inevitably this leads to problems and drama, or worse. If you friend students on Facebook, their family lawyer could theoretically submit a discovery request for the entire contents of your Facebook account. As with cell phones used for teacher-student communication, communication with students via Facebook is subject to discovery requests.

2. Use Facebook Pages with caution. While students could technically "Like" your Facebook Page without "friending" you, still be cautious about what you share and how you share it when using a Facebook Page. Remember, should you choose to use a professional Facebook Page for communicating with students, this Facebook page needs to be maintained by a separate professional Facebook account, used specifically for professional purposes. Any communications with students made through your professional Facebook Page need to abide by the expectations outlined in the Employee Handbook and the Employee Responsible Use Policy.

3. Like all other technology and software used on the school network, Facebook access and use should be for professional purposes.  Any abuse in terms of purpose or duration will be dealt with according to the Employee Responsible Use Policy.

Excerpt from YouTube’s Term of Service:

Within Section 5.1 L it states: "You agree not to access Content or any reason other than your personal, non-commercial use solely as intended through and permitted by the normal functionality of the Service, and solely for Streaming. "Streaming" means a contemporaneous digital transmission of the material by YouTube via the Internet to a user operated Internet enabled device in such a manner that the data is intended for real-time viewing and not intended to be downloaded (either permanently or temporarily), copied, stored, or redistributed by the user.

Excerpts from Employee Handbook:

The employee is prohibited from knowingly communicating with students through a personal social network page; the employee must create a separate social network page (“professional page”) for the purpose of communicating with students. The employee must enable administration and parents to access the employee’s professional page.”  (This includes YouTube Channel and Facebook)

“Use of Electronic Media for Classroom Instruction

Not all content available on the Internet is vetted by reputable educational institutions, so preview all content before presenting to students. If there is any question about the appropriateness of content, consult your campus administrator before presenting to students. Do not allow students to use any of your personal Electronic Devices – iPads/tablets, smart phones, laptops or any other device capable of creating or managing Electronic Media – OR, disable/turn off all forms of network and messaging communication before allowing student use, and then only under direct supervision. Use of Electronic Devices should be consistent with identified educational purposes related to your teaching assignment and/or District Goals. When utilizing Social Media or other Internet content for instruction, avoid personal bias, avoid taking parts out of context, and present balanced perspectives.

For those in instructional roles, teach students what respect means in the context of Digital Citizenship: A responsible digital citizen is one who:

o Respects Ones’ Self. Users will select online names that are appropriate and will consider the information

and images that are posted online.

o Respect Others. Users will refrain from using technologies to bully, tease or harass other people.

o Protects One’s Self and Others. Users will protect themselves and others by reporting abuse and not forwarding inappropriate materials or communications.

o Respects Intellectual Property. Users will suitably cite any and all use of websites, books, media, etc.

o Protects Intellectual Property. Users will request to use the software and media others produce.”

Excerpts from Employee Responsible Use Policy:

Do not send messages that are abusive, threatening, harassing, obscene, sexually oriented, discriminatory, damaging, illegal, false or contain profanity. Do not send chain letters, virus warnings, urban legends or other unsubstantiated scares. Do not use the system or district website for commercial purposes, financial gain, political lobbying, expressing personal opinions or any illegal purposes.

“Do not abuse or misuse the computer, the network or the programs in any way. This includes intentionally wasting resources, downloading music, movies, and entertainment media during school hours, playing online games, creating or printing inappropriate materials, printing excessive quantities, tampering with computer parts, erasing programs or others’ files, introducing viruses, attempting to gain unauthorized access and/or modifying settings without permission.”
