H.W. Prep for Cellular Diversity Seminar

Questions 1-4 are found in Chapter 6. Other questions are found much later in your book.

Chapter 27. Archaea and Bacteria

Chapter 28. Protists

Chapter 31. Fungi

Use additional resources (check blog) as needed. Answers must be COMPLETE. I’m looking for full sentences, diagrams, and thorough explanations. No short cuts.

Attempt 8 (question 4 is required*): 80%

Attempt 9 (question 4 required*): 90%

Attempt 10: 100%

(Scores on based on ON TIME homework.

Late homework will go down 10% a day without prior approval/excused absence.)

HIGHLY SUGGESTED: Plan a study session with at least one other person. Review your answers and help each other in places you are stuck. But remember, the answers you write down must be your own.

  1. Compare and contrast what you can see with different types and/or different settings on microscopes. Check the blog for links about different microscopes. Do your best to understand how electron microscopes compare to light microscopes.
  2. What makes prokaryotic cells different than eukaryotic cells? Be as complete as you can. What do they still have in common?
  3. Side by side, how do animal and plant cells compare and contrast? Be specific and use vocabulary.
  4. * Give a profile of each cell part described (including the three parts of the cytoskeleton) in    Chapter 6. Build a table with these categories:

Cell Part

Structure

Function

Interesting Facts

  1. Chapter 27. Bacteria and Archaea. Describe some of the variation in bacteria (shapes, gram staining, capsules, and appendages).
  2. Compare Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya (see table in Chapter 27, p 566/567). What evidence do you see that Archaea and Eukarya are more similar than Archaea and Bacteria?
  3. Pick one section of Chapter 27 to read in more depth. Summarize the most interesting ideas.
  4. Chapter 28. Protists. What is the theory of endosymbiosis? How does it relate to diversity in Protista?
  5. Pick one section of Chapter 28 to read in more depth. Summarize the most interesting ideas.
  6. Chapter 31. Fungi. Pick one section of this chapter to read in more depth. Summarize the most interesting ideas.
