4th Grade Newsletter Friday, May 17, 2019 A Note from Mr. Baxendale Good Afternoon Fourth Grade Parents,
I wanted to make everyone aware of concerns that have recently been brought to my attention, by faculty and students, of a disturbing amount of foul language that seems to be escalating among the fourth graders. There have been instances of cussing as well as discussing sexuality and other mature topics which many student do not fully comprehend.
As a parent of two daughters (second and fifth Grade) I fully understand the increased exposure that social media, television and the internet have given to topics meant for more emotionally mature audiences. Often times the younger students will see or hear something and not fully understand the meaning or the severity of some of these languages and behaviors. All of the staff at McCormick is working to keep our students safe and educate them as to avoiding and processing material described above and we will continue to reinforce the lessons you are sharing at home.
If I have any specific, individual concerns regarding a student, please be aware that you will be contacted. Otherwise I ask that you continue to partner with us and guide our students in what is appropriate and inappropriate language in school. I also encourage you to contact me or the fourth grade team should you have any questions or concerns to share.
Thank you all for your continued support and have a great weekend,
Best Regards, Nathan Baxendale

4th Grade Newsletter Friday, March 1, 2019
A message from Mr. Baxendale: Good Afternoon 4th Grade Parents, I am writing to clarify the discussion and incidents leading up to the discussion which was had with the class last Friday. Over the past two weeks Mrs. Horton and I have been speaking with many 4th grade students who have expressed a growing concern about languages and actions that some of their classmates, male and female, have been exhibiting. These have been very sexuallyexplicit and mature in nature. Last Wednesday, February 20, Mrs.Horton spoke with three girls who named specific students behaving this way but also shared with us that many of the other students would laugh and encourage the behaviors while not explicitly participating. Mrs. Horton and I spoke with the 4th grade teachers and we decided to have a conversation about appropriate and inappropriate languages and behaviors. As part of our weekly OLWEUS anti-bullying program, the classroom meetings are very similar to the meeting that we had on Friday: identifying behavior concerns, discussing why they are not appropriate, identifying alternative behaviors and finally bringing the concerns to an adult rather than being a bystander. The discussions on Friday followed the exact same pattern. The students were not given any punishment or assignment but rather a “free write” activity which allowed them to privately write their thoughts on the matter. This is a technique that we use often to help our younger students better vocalize their thoughts. These free-write exercises are in a 4th grade file folder and they have not been read as that was not the purpose of the exercise.Additionally I contacted the parents of any student who was specifically alleged to have engaged in these behaviors and we discussed expectations going forward. I can assure you that the team and I will continue to communicate weekly through classroom bulletins and on class dojo and if another incident arises which we feel is necessitating a mass communication to the entire grade I will make sure to do so.Additionally, this message will be posted to the entire 4th grade parent list on classroom dojo. Thank you and please feel free to contact me with any additional questions or concerns that you may have. Respectfully, Mr. Baxendale Subject Chatter Language Arts (Mrs. Hamisfar) - This week in class student finalized their stories and printed. Students will need to work on illustrations outside of class along with binding the book. A paper was sent home today with students today explaining illustrations and binding. Also this week we continued to work on pulling information from the text to answer questions, using the online version of ReadWorks. Books will be due Monday, March 11th. Math (Mrs. Birchfield) - All Study Island lessons are due by the test on Wednesday, March 6. We will talk about prime and composite numbers and multiplying whole numbers by a fraction before the test. Please continue to work on multiplication facts with your child. Science (Mrs. Lane-Unger) - This week we reviewed and had our test over Heat/Thermal Energy. Expect tests to be returned mid-week. We started our unit on Electrical Energy by learning about atoms, parts of atoms, and how static electricity forms. Next week, we will continue to learn more about static electricity then begin to learn about current electricity and circuits. Social Studies (Mrs. Sumpter) - We started to learn about the causes of the American Revolution. Next week we will review these and discuss what occurred during and after the war. Subject Chatter Language Arts (Mrs. Hamisfar) - This week students worked on identifying points of view and how a story would change if it was written from another point of view. We took a 7 question quiz to check for understanding on Friday. Students are still chugging along with their young author stories, many students have finished writing and are now typing. We will then start to make edits once typed. Math (Mrs. Birchfield) - This week we began working on using arrays and breaking apart numbers to multiply. Please encourage your child to practice the strategies I am teaching in class. These strategies are not “new math” but are strategies that help us all to understand why the standard algorithm (“old math” or “shortcuts”) works. Most of the time, we may not understand these strategies, but our kids pick up on them quickly and will have a better understanding because of it. Once we have a good grasp on the foundations of multi-digit multiplication, we will begin working with the standard algorithm. At that point, students will be allowed to choose the method that works best for them. If at any point you have any questions or would like me to clarify a strategy, please just email or call me. Please complete the following survey about Home Technology. https://goo.gl/forms/oJAqVL9rTMhdyBMr2 Science (Mrs. Lane-Unger) - This week, we have finished our introduction to ecosystems and had our chapter test today.
