Materials

Smartboard

Smart notebook

Standard(s)

MELS: Number Sense and Operations- Standard 4.10h

Introduce

To ensure children will be able to count 1-10 items with one count per item by the time they enter kindergarten, have them use Smart notebook to demonstrate counting to 5 using farm animals. When you are introducing centers for the day say: Today, we are going to use the Smartboard to demonstrate counting to 5 with farm animals during center time.

Model

(Prior to the lesson, you will need to create a page in Smart notebook that includes 5 different farm animals and a Five Frame and also create a model video of you counting the farm animals, showing the students what to do.)

Place each animal one by one onto the Five Frames as you count each one. Repeat this 2-3 times, each time placing the animals in different order. (Make sure to tell students that it doesn’t matter what order the animals are in, there is always 5) (At this time students can click play to watch the video for the demonstration.)

Guided Practice

Have each student in the center group take turns practicing dragging each animal onto the Five Frame and counting with the his or her center group. (Encourage each student to chose a different order to show that it doesn’t matter what order the animals are placed in, it still comes out to be 5.)

Your Turn

Then have each student one at a time practice counting to 5 using the Smartboard and Smart notebook page you set up.(Record students using a video camera or the app Screencast-o-matic, so that you can create a video of them counting to 5 that you can share with parents and/or the students.)
