Project Rubric

Note that these are helpful tools for the project:

Please note that we will work on the fraction projects in class and teachers will help students to complete these projects as time permits. The tools below support this project work. All projects should be complete by 3/31. I will look over the weekend of 3/25 and 4/1.

Project Criteria

What to Include

Points Earned

Title/Author

  • Create a great cover and include your name and title

Story Theme

  • Choose a topic you are interested in
  • Tell a simple, but good story
  • Include images

Simplify Fractions (3)

  • Number equation 5/10 = ½
  • Show a model:

  • Connect to story. He was running a 10 mile race. He ran 5/10 which is equal to one half.

Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators (3)

  • Number sentence such as ½ + ¼ = 2/4 + ¼ = 3/4
  • Model such as

1/4

2/4

  • Connects to story (she had ¼ and he had 2/4, how much did they have altogether?)

Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators (3)

  • Number sentence such as ½ - ¼ = 2/4 - ¼ = 1/4
  • Model such as

X

  • Connects to story (She had ½ of the candy bar and ate ¼ of the candy bar--how much left)

Multiply Fractions (3)

  • Number sentence: ½ X ¼ = ⅛

  • Connects to story (ex. “He gave one half of the one fourth of the cake left to his brother.”)

Divide Fractions (3)

Number sentence: 4 ⅓ = 4/1 X 3/1 = 12

This means 4 divided into groups of ⅓.

  • Connects to story. (They divided the 4 licorice sticks into pieces that equaled ⅓. How many pieces did they have?)

Or I had ⅔ of the candies left. I divided the ⅔ into groups of 1/6 . How many ⅙ groups could I make?

left

left

left

left

         ⅓ = 2/6         ⅓ = 2/6            ⅓ = 2/6

If you have ⅔ left and divide that ⅔ into ⅙ pieces, you can see that you will have four ⅙ pieces.

⅙ = ⅔ X 6/1 = 12/3 = 4

Change mixed numbers into improper fractions. (3)

  • Number equation 2 ⅔ = 3/3 + 3/3 + ⅔ = 8/3
  • Example: ++
  • Connect to story: Tali ordered three pizzas. Each pizza was divided into thirds. 8/3 o3 2 ⅓  were eaten, how many pieces were left? ⅓

Number Lines

(1 point for every number line)

  • Use a number line to show as many fraction concepts as possible.
  • Ex:

Mathematical Language (1 pt for every mathematical word)

  • Highlight each mathematical word. Use the word appropriately.

Good Spelling (5)

  • Make sure you spell check

Neat, Interesting Work (5)

  • Thoughtful overall project, interesting/fun to read
  • Informative

Presentation at School Meeting or to a younger grade (10)

  • Practice your presentation
  • Make an appointment with a teacher to present
  • Present
