My dear Marczi –

Your three letters are in front of me – but it is only today that I find time to communicate with you – I have written to Szerén^[1] in reply to her letter – in which she tells me that they have bought a house – and would like to build an extension – but I have not shown any interest – and do not plan to.

I know Gyula^[2] and I was interested in what you told me – but I have enough obligations of my own without getting embroiled in his underhand dealings. Meanwhile I hope the jewellery for the two girls has arrived – it was my first present to Lucy from Rome – when I painted the Pope [4509] 4 months before my wedding – Did it arrive? It has been some time and I sent some French money in case of possible customs duty but I have not heard from them – Ilonka^[3] wrote – to me – and to Lucy^[4] – and I forwarded your letter. As to your request, please deal with Bárczy^[5] yourself – I cannot keep on turning to him – with my family affairs – I know if you ask him yourself he will take care of it – and it’s a more dignified

approach, rather than you writing to me and then me writing to him – I enclose some stamps with my letter –

Bárczy^[6] is now in a terrible state – his son Charlie^[7] is dying – I’m telegraphing him constantly – wishing him a recovery from [illegible] – he is an extremely intelligent, cultured young man – and his one joy, his only child – he has just wired to say that his condition is critical – ask after him immediately – and wait with your request until the situation

improves.

I am glad that the winter coat – and clothes are doing good service – long may you wear them in health – and happiness – Lucy’s last – wireless telegram said that she had arrived safely – it is exactly a week now since she has been at Grace’s^[8] – a huge distance – but it will do her a lot of good – for my part, I feel the distance very much – but I have a lot to do – and have a lot of help – imagine what it means to leave this huge household behind – and dear Bar Patrick^[9] will, with a secretary, help to manage everything. Meanwhile I have dismissed the chauffeur – and the Daimler car – during my absence – everything will be thoroughly checked – and gone over and before I leave, I will finish two portraits – an attractive young blonde

lady – Lady Illingworth [6968] – and the banker – Baron Emil d’Erlanger [4341] – I’ll continue with the other canvases when I return – But in the meantime, I hope that with God’s help I shall have many interesting days in America. I only plan to stay till the end of January – Then I return here – for a week – and from here I go to Madeira – where I will find Lucy – from there I plan to go to Morocco – where it is warm – and there is an interesting Arab way of life – I want to paint some sketches – we will stay quietly in Madeira for a week – it will be so sweet to meet her here – my ship sails on 7th Dec – Berengaria and I arrive in New York on Dec 13th – Plaza Hotel – Lucy’s address is

The boys are fine. Yesterday and today I was at my brother-in-law Harvard’s, in his lovely country home, Patrick was there – and Johny^[10] came by car from Oxford – for lunch

it’s an hour’s journey – he comes home for his vac on the 4th of Dec. So before my departure – he will go to Gerrard Little’s^[11] in the countryside to study quietly – after that – we will not be together with our boys – at the moment I am painting Paul’s lovely wife [10477] – she is my favourite – a tranquil, kind-hearted lady – Stephen’s^[12] factory is going well, they have a staff of 47 now – and have just perfected a new invention – a kind of valve – which contains three in one, because three are needed – so what it means is that all the power will be in one lamp – so the Radio cabinets can be smaller. It will certainly be a great success – but of course no profits can be taken for some time because they have to be invested back into the factory –

Scitovszky^[13] was here and Baron Ullmann and we had dinner together with Sam Guinness^[14] – I also saw Count András Bethlen who is giving lectures here – but the timing is not very good for that – I think that by the end of this year there will be many positive changes in the political and economic situation – Is Apponyi’s portrait in the museum [2596], I wonder? Write to me about how your business is doing – how you are paying your expenses – I wrote to Genshov today – to say that by the end of this month – another 2000 francs will be on their way to you from Paris

What you wrote about the Municipal Museum in the Károlyi Palace is interesting. I remember the genre picture which the municipality paint bought from me for 300 forints [11601]^[15] – when I was at [illegible] – it was painted at the Svábs^[16] in 1892 – time is passing – I begin to feel it – my book on portrait painting will be finished by the end of this week^[17] – it was a lot of work – and will not be published until the end of February next year – but no such book has been written until now – my canvas which I donated to the hospital here, as you saw, in the presence of the Queen, was sold for 575 guineas – and it is only a half-length portrait – it will be of Lady Carisbrooke [3183] –

Yes, old chap, such is my reputation here, I’m the only artist they approach, no one else, because they know how popular I am – my peers don’t like it!

It’s true – I am also getting on with my memoirs – there is no one now living who has had a career like mine – I began at the age of 9 – in front of me sits the image of our good mother,^[18] our guardian angel. If only I could talk to her – but I am with her – Where do the days go, what happened to our youth – “Das Leben ist wie ein Traum” [Life is like a dream], that is what she so often wrote to me and now I feel exactly the same – We’ll see each other in Pest in March – God bless you – Write to me at once, before I set sail on the high sea

ösmerem Gyulát, s érdekelt mint elmondtál – de eléggé kötelezetségeim vannak – semhogy az ő furfangos ügyeivel foglalkozzak. Örvendek hogy a téli kabát - s ruha jó szolgálatot tesz – viseld sokáig egészségben – örömben – s Lucy utolsó – drót nélküli sürgönye volt hogy jól megérkezett – éppen egy hete hogy Grace nél van – óriási távolság – de végre jót fog tenni neki magam nagyon érzem a távolságot – de a rengeteg elfoglaltságomban – nagy a segítség – képzelheted mit jelent e nagy háztartást itt hagyni – s a jó Bar Patrick fogja egy kisegítő titkárral az ügyeket elintézni. Közbe a chaufeurt elküldtem – s a Daimler autó – távollétem alatt – alaposan fogják átnézni – tisztázni s mielőtt elindulok két arczképet fejezek be – egy fiatal csinos szőke

Ezzel bizonyára nagy sikere lesz – Természetesen a hasznát nem vehetig még egy ideig igénybe mert szüksegük van azt a gyárban befektetni -

Itt járt Scitovszky [4859] és Baron Ullmann együdt voltunk Sam Guinness-nél vacsorán is – továbbá együdt voltam Gróf Bethlen Andrással aki itt felolvasásokat tart – azonban az idő most nem igen alkalmas arra – Én azt hiszem hogy ez év végével sok jó változások fognak történni a politikai s economicai helyzetben – Vajjon Apponyi arczképe el van e helyezve a museumban. Írjál miként van üzleted – miként fizeted kötelességeidet – Ma írtam Genshovnak – hogy Parisból fog érkezni e hó végével ismét – 2000 frank részedre

a mit írtál a fővárosi múzeumról a Károlyi Palotában érdekes. En emlékezem a genre képre melyet a főváros  festett vásárolt tőlem 300 forintért – mikor [illegible] voltam - a Svákéknál [sic] – 1892ben készült - múlik az idő – kezdem érezni – könyvem az arczképfestészetről e hét végével fog befejeződni – sok munkába került – s csak február végével a jövő évben fog megjelenni – de hasonló könyvet meg idaig nem írtak – vásznam melyet a korháznak itt felajánltam mint láttad a királynő jelenlétében, 575 guinnessért [sic] let megvéve – és csak mellkép nagyságú – Lady Carisbrooke [3183] less festve rajta –

Igen öregem ilyen itt a reputatiom s engemet nem mást kérnek fel, mert tudjak minő popularis vagyok a collegak nem szeretik!

Bizony - életem megirásával is foglalkozom – nincsen most élő ember a kinek hasonló carrierje van – kezdem 9 éves koromban – előttem jó anyánk arczképe védő angyalunk – bár beszélhetnék hozzá – de vele vagyok – Hol vannak a napok, fiatalságunk – sokszor írta nekem “Das Leben ist wie ein Traum” s most magam is érzem így.
