Lesson 5 – Human Rights

In this unit, you will be assessed on the following:

• I can define what human rights are.
• I can explain the purpose of the 1948 Declaration of Human Rights and some rights it declares.
• I can identify nations who have signed the 1948 Declaration of Human Rights.
• I can explain how human rights violations are addressed.

Human Rights in East and Southeast Asia

Activity 1:  Reading through the UN website on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Complete the discussion questions in the Human Rights Assignment.

Activity 2:  Review the following website: Human Rights Watch. Find at least one violation of human rights in East and Southeast Asia in today’s world. Complete the Human Rights Watch Activity.

Activity 3:  Using Google Earth. Go to East and Southeast Asia. Click on layers > global awareness, and scan through the region to find stories on human rights violations. They are marked with the “Every Human Has Rights” label. Locations they can be found are in Beijing, SW Myanmar, and two of them in the Philippines. Read the stories and autobiographies as well as watch the videos. Complete the Human Rights Violation Activity.
