What is it call when we move an object forwards?

  1. Have the children name their favorite animal. Ask: How does the animal gets around?
  2. Sing “The Wheels on the Bus.”
  3. sing the song  again,  having children do the actions along with me.
  4. Discuss ways things move. Say You can jump like up and down. You can walk back and forth.
  5. Ask: How else we can move?
  6. Have the children demonstrate push and pull.
  7. Help generate a list of ways things move, for example, “round and round,” “in and out,” and “zigzag.”
  8. Have the children answer the following questions: What is it call when we move an object forwards? How can we move a chair? (pushing) How else can we move the chair? (pulling)
  9. Have the children investigate how they could move objects.

 How did the farmer do to get the turnip out the ground?

  1. Review pushing and pulling.
  2. Read aloud “The Big Great Turnip.”
  3. Ask: How did the farmer get the turnip out? (By pulling the turnip)
  4. Build a ramp.
  5. Discuss how objects can move fast or slow when pushed or pulled.
  6. Ask: How can you make something move faster or more slowly? Will a ramp make things move faster or more slowly?
  7. What will happen if you put one car in the bottom of a ramp and roll another down the ramp?
  8. Have the children investigate to find what happens and tell whether the resulting movement was push or a pull. 
  1. How did the farmer do to get the turnip out the ground?
