Origins of the surname

Coffyn / Coffin

COFFIN is a world of Hebrew origin, signifying a small basket. Whether the Israelite hosts were sufficiently enlightened to be in the the enjoyment of baskets before the Egyptians, or whether the chosen people of God were especially favored with a knowledge of the art of basketmaking while the rest of the world plodded on with less commodious means of transit, are matters which cannot at this remote period of time be satisfactorily answered. But when, according to sacred history, we read that a multitude , from a desert place, were fed with five loaves and two fishes, and there was taken up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full, we may be assured that baskets flourished among the Jews anterior to the Christian era; so, of course, small baskets, or coffins, are of Jewish origin. 1066, Sir Richard Coffin: Our First Recorded Ancestor.

“The Coffin Family may be traced back to William called the Conqueror, who was King of England. In his army he had a General by the name of Coffin. After the conquest he gave an estate to General Coffin, which was entailed and at this; time it is held by a descendant by the name of Coffin, in the town of Rrixam (Brixham) in the county of Devonshire, England.” (From a latter record)

Like all the Nobility of Normandy he would have been of Scandinavian descent. The Vikings were settling in Normandy around the 800’s AD through conquest, they were given the “Duchy of Normandy” by the French King “Charles the Simple” as a defense against other Viking Armies. The First “Duke of Normandy” was Hrolf or Rollo 911AD (an ancestor of “William the Conqueror”).

Sir Richard fought as a General for “William the Conqueror” (formally “William the Bastard”) at the Battle of Hastings, during the Norman invasion of England and Williams successful claim for the English Crown.

Wikipedia: Companions of William the Conqueror.

Over the centuries since the Battle of Hastings, many people in England have claimed that an ancestor fought on the Norman side. While there is sound evidence of extensive settlement in England by people of Norman, Breton and Flemish origin after 1066, the fact remains that the names of only 15 men who were with Duke William at the battle can be found in reliable sources.

Google Search: Men who fought with William the Conqueror

His land “Gifted” in England for his valuable service to the new King was the Estate of the Manor of Alwington a few miles from Bideford, Devonshire southwestern England. Coffins are also in the Williams “Doomsday book” (1080) as current inhabitants of England, probably settlers from France at an earlier date.

The Domesday Book Online

Source does not include the surname “Coffin.”

Google Search: Domesday book surnames

The Coffins spread out to Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Cornwall. By 1252 the name in its different forms (Colvin, Corvin, Cophen and Coffyn) are frequently found in records. The name is disputed in its origins. Welsh “Coffyn” meaning hill top boundary, English and French: metonymic occupational name for a basket maker, from Old French cof(f)in ‘basket’ (Late Latin cophinus, Greek kophinos). The modern English word coffin is a specialized development of this term, not attested until the 16th century, and the most likely to me is the meaning of “Coffer” or treasure box.

The coffin house reflects Brixham humour: it is coffin-shaped and when a father was asked for the hand in marriage of his daughter, he said he would 'see her in a coffin, before she wed'. The future son-in-law bought the coffin-shaped property, called it the Coffin House, and went back to the father and said: 'Your wishes will be met, you will see your daughter in a coffin, the Coffin House'. Amazed by this, the father gave his blessing. (Wikipedia: Brixham, Devon, England)

COFFYN, Tristram                m.                                Stevens, Dionis [1, page __]

Tristram Coffyn, (as he always signed his name) the founder of the family line in America, and from whom all persons by the name of Coffin in this country are descended, was born at Brixton, a small parish and village, near Plymouth, in the southeastern part of Devonshire county, England, in the year 1605. He married Dionis Stevens, daughter of Robert Stevens, esquire, of Brixton, and in 1642, migrated to America with his wife, five small children, his widowed mother, and two unmarried sisters. He lived alternately in Salisbury, Haverhill, and Newbury, in the Colony of Massachusetts, until 1659, when he came to Nantucket, then under the jurisdiction of New York, and made arrangements for the purchase of the island by a company which he organized at Salisbury. He returned to the island with his family in 1660, where he lived until his death, which happened on the 2nd day of October, A.D. 1681, at his new residence on the hill, at Northam, near Capaum Pond, at the age of 76 years. Most of the records we have give her name as "Sally". We do not know whether she was named Sally or Sarah with Sallie as a nickname even in official records. [2]

The Nantucket, MA, Methodist Episcopal Church records have "Sally, daughter of Elias and Abigail Coffin, born 1772. Baptized by Mr. William Beauchamp 4 August 1799." [2]

The Boston, MA, Marriages, 1752-1809, has "Nathaniel Cornell married by Rev. Joseph Eckley, D.D., July 13 1800 to Sally Coffin." [2]

The Coffin Family by Louis Coffin published in 1962 by the Nantucket Historical Association shows (pg 419) the children of Sallie (Coffin) and Nathaniel Cornell as Joseph Russell, Sallie, Lydia, Eliza, Mary, and Elias. This data was probably submitted by a descendant, not necessarily direct, to the Genealogy Committee of the 1881 (or possibly the 1959) Coffin Family Reunion on Nantucket. [2]

1A. References that discount claim that

“The Coffin Family may be traced back to William called the Conqueror, who was King of England. In his army he had a General by the name of Coffin.”
