The Director,

The Fine Arts Society,

148, New Bond Street, W.1.

Dear Sir,

I was surprised to hear, from your letter of the 20th inst.,[1] that the picture of a Bull by E.I. Aladar,[2] had been returned to him, and I hope it has reached him safely, as I understood, a few days ago, from a friend of his, that he had not yet received the picture.

I am now enclosing the photograph of a pastel of the late Empress of Russia, painted by Koppay,[3] who was the Hungarian painted [sic] who used to be so much at the Russian court.

The original picture belongs to a former butler of the last Grand Duke of Hesse,[4] who, as you know, was brother to the Empress of Russia.[5] He is now in very great distress, and has asked me to help him to sell the picture, but does not say how much he wants for it. You will find on the cardboard, which I enclose, his address. If you think you could dispose of the picture to either an American or a Museum or Gallery – you will be doing a good work – and I under these circumstances do not wish to have anything further to do with it – but if you decide on the contrary, will you please return me the photograph.

Believe me,

Yours faithfully,

SMDL
