Spell to Write and Read is a curriculum designed by Wanda Sanseri and inspired by Ramalda Spalding’s Writing Road to Reading. It covers K-12th grade spelling to teach how the English language works using reliable principles that help the student to internalize (spell), recognize (read), compose (write), and comprehend (understand) words. (Google “Literacy Today: What is Wrong and How Can We Fix It?” in order to gain better understanding of the program.)

Starting with penmanship, I will teach the class Cursive First (as a dyslexic mother of four boys I have found this to be invaluable!) along with phonics. Students will learn letter shapes and sounds simultaneously. Quickly, the class will progress to spelling words by breaking them down into sounds ( using the “think to spell” method ), all the while learning multi-letter Phonograms, and the rules that govern our English language.

In class, I will drill the phonograms progressing each week until all 70 phonograms are covered; I will drill and quiz phonograms every class. I will also teach a new spelling list and give a spelling test. These test are designed to help the students succeed! On occasion, I will include enrichments to help the students develop what they have learned.

As the parent/teacher you will be required to understand the program. You will also be required to drill/review the materials I covered in class and help with writing assignments. The Wise Guide has a list in every lesson of practical ways to review, these will benefit your student greatly. The work at home should take no more than 20 minutes a day, 2-3 days a week.

This will be a fun class! Our goal is exposure to many words, not mastery. Mastery of words will come with mastery of all 70 phonograms and the rules, which our children will learn, and learn well! If you are considering this class, it is not age based. It is for any student ready and able to control a pencil, needing to learn the phonograms, and the rules to spelling and reading.

Required Materials: Each family will need one copy of each book:

1. Spell to Write and Read by Sanseri

2. Wise Guide for Spelling by Sanseri

All three of these can be used for the whole family and are valuable through multiple grade levels.

Each student will build a Lab Workbook in order to learn the importance of documenting data collection and emphasize organization. The goal being to form good habits for future science classes. The textbook will be required for students who are able to read. For students who are still learning to read, the textbook is optional depending on the parents goals for the class. (In order to gain the most information the parent or another reader will need to read the text to the student.) There are 14 lessons in this text covering:  swimming creatures from the microscopic to the massive.  Each chapter will be split up and covered over two weeks. We will utilize the beautiful camp to the fullest, exploring and experimenting! This is going to be a fun class, designed to encourage the love of studying God’s creation.
