Part 2: Determine Your Baby’s Traits

Directions: Locate the brown paper bag at your lab table. The bag contains two pieces of construction paper, one of the pieces is black and the other is red. The black piece represents a dominant trait and the red pieces represent a recessive trait.

Procedure:

  1. Determine who will be the mother and who will be the father. It doesn’t matter if the mother and father are girls or boys – this is merely a simulation.

  1. Each parent will get an opportunity to pull a piece of paper out of the bag (without looking).  Whatever color the parent pulls out is the type of trait the baby inherits from that parent.

  1. In the chart, write a capital letter in the blank if the trait passed is dominant and lower case letter if the trait passed is recessive. You will do this for each parent and for each type of trait.

  1. When you both have pulled colors for each trait and have completed the parent portion of the trait chart, you will then determine what the genotype and phenotype of the child will be.

Remember: D + D = D                 r + r = r         D + r = D

  1. Stop when you arrive at number 15. This step will be completed as a class.

  1. When you have completed the chart, draw your baby and name it.
