A Christmas Carol AU

A Christmas Carol AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed in the roles of the main characters from the 1843 Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol (or one of its many adaptations). This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Fairytale AU and the Dickensian AU.

Adventure Time AU

The Adventure Time AU is an AU where the main characters of the source material are reimagined as living in the universe of the Cartoon Network animated series Adventure Time. Usually, with the source material characters either filling the roles of the main Adventure Time cast or being reimagined as their own characters existing in the Adventure Time universe.

Addams Family AU

The Addams Family AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed in the roles of characters from the Addams Family comics by Charles Addams and/or its film and television adaptations. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Dark AU.

Age Bend AU

Age Bend AU is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material are reimagined as having a different age to their canonical one. For example, a younger character is aged up into an older one. Or an older character aged down to be younger.

Age Swap AU

Age swap AU is where characters from the source material have their ages reversed, so one character has the canon age of another and vice versa. Usually, with a younger character being the age of an older character, and said older character now being the age of the younger. This AU scenario can be considered an offshoot of the Role Swap AU or the Age Bend AU.

Akira AU

The Akira AU is an AU where characters from the source material play the roles of characters from the 1988 Katsuhiro Otomo-directed animated cyberpunk action film Akira, based on the manga of the same name. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the sci-fi AU and cyberpunk AU.

Alice in Wonderland AU

The Alice in Wonderland AU, also known as the Wonderland AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material play the roles of the characters from the 1865 children’s fantasy novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Fairy-tale AU.

Alien AU

The Alien AU (not to be confused with the Ridley Scott Alien/Xenomorph AU) is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material are reimagined as extraterrestrials. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the science fiction AU.

Alien Invasion AU

The Alien Invasion AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed in a scenario where extraterrestrials invade earth. Typically, either to exterminate humanity (to replace them or harvest them as a food source), enslave humanity, steal the planet’s resources, and/or obliterate the earth altogether. Sometimes characters can be portrayed as humans trying to fight off or simply survive the alien threat. In contrast, in some works, a few characters (or, in some cases, all characters) can be reimagined as aliens on the invading side. This AU scenario can be considered a sub-scenario of the Science Fiction AU.

All Tomorrows AU

All Tomorrows AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as the various post-human species of the 2006 speculative evolution sci-fi novel All Tomorrows by author and artist C.M. Koseman. Usually, with the characters redesigned as one of the post-human species of the second empire, such as the Killer Folk, Modular People, Bug Facers, etc. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Science Fiction AU.

Amnesia AU

the Amnesia AU (not to be confused with the Amnesia: The Dark Descent AU), also known as the memory loss AU, is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material lose some or all of their memories.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent AU

The Amnesia: The Dark Descent AU, also known simply as the Amnesia AU (not to be confused with the Memory Loss/Amnesia AU), is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the 2012 survival horror adventure game Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Typically, with characters of the source material being placed into the roles of characters from the game. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the horror AU and the Dark AU.

Amphibia AU

The Amphibia AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the Matt Braly-created Disney Channel animated adventure fantasy comedy series, Amphibia. Typically, with the source material-characters either playing the roles of characters from the series or are redesigned in the Amphibia art style. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Disney AU and the Modern AU.

Anime AU

The Anime AU, also known as the Manga AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined in the anime style, aka Japanese animation. The category encompasses a wide and diverse variety of different styles and genres. It does, however,  commonly feature stylistic motifs such as character designs with large, detailed eyes, uniquely styled hair, or ambiguous race or nationality. This AU often involves characters from the original source material either being placed into the roles of characters from popular anime series and films such as Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, Sailor Moon, the works of Studio Ghibli, etc., or the characters being redesigned in the art style of a notable or famous Japanese manga/anime creator, artist or studio.

Animal Crossing AU

The Animal Crossing AU is where characters from the source material are placed into the world of the Nintendo life simulation video game series Animal Crossing. Usually, with the characters reimagined as animal villagers, or  portrayed as human villagers. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the anthro animal AU.

Amateur Sleuth AU

The Amateur Sleuth AU is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material are reimagined as amateur sleuths. Individuals with no formal connection to law enforcement who regularly solve mysteries, usually without payment.

Amish AU

The Amish AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as Amish. A Christian group in North America known for rejecting technology and living in rural communities away from modern society.

Anastasia AU

Anastasia AU is an AU where characters from the source material are reimagined as playing the roles of characters from the 1998 Don Bluth/20th Century Fox animated film Anastasia.

Ancient Babylonian AU

The Ancient Babylonian AU, also known as the Babylon AU, Babylonia AU, or Babylonian Empire AU, is an AU in which characters from the original source material are reimagined as living in the society of Babylon, located in what is now modern-day Iraq, somewhere between 1845 BC and 539 BC.

Ancient Egypt AU

The Ancient Egypt AU, Also known as the Ancient Egyptian AU, Egyptian AU, Pharaoh AU, or Pharaoh/servant AU, is an AU where characters from the source material are reimagined as people living in the society of Ancient Egypt somewhere between the early Dynastic Period (3150–2686 BC) and the Late Period (664–332 BC)

The Ancient Greece AU, also known as the Ancient Greece AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as people living in the society of Greece somewhere between the 12th and 9th centuries BC.

Animal AU

The animal AU, also known as the No Humans AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as animals.

Angels AU

Angels AU is an AU where one or more characters from the source material are portrayed as angels - divine, fallen, or otherwise. This AU can be considered a subcategory of the Wings AU.

Anne of Green Gables AU

Anne of Green Gables AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the roles of characters from the 1908 Lucy Maud Montgomery all-ages novel Anne of Green Gables.

Anthro animal AU

The anthro animal AU, also known as the Furry AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as anthropomorphized animal characters. This AU scenario can be considered an offshoot of the Animal AU.

Among Us AU

The Among Us AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the 2018 online multiplayer social deduction party game, Among Us. Typically, with the characters re-imagined as crewmates and/or people playing the game. For the versions where characters are players, this AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Modern AU.

Apartment complex AU

The Apartment Complex AU is an AU where characters from the original source material all live in a typically modern-day apartment complex. Either being roommates or neighbors to each other. This AU scenario can be considered a sub-scenario of the modern AU and an alternative to the Roommates AU.

Arabian Nights AU

The Arabian Nights AU is an AU in which characters from the original source material are cast as characters from the Arabian Nights Tales or are placed in a fantastical South Asian or medieval Arabian setting. This can be considered an offshoot of the Fairy-tale AU.

Arthurian Fantasy AU

Arthurian Fantasy AU, also known as the Camelot AU or the Arthurian AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material live in a world of Arthurian Fantasy. A sub-genre of fantasy that typically uses a combination of elements from the earliest traditional Arthurian legends penned by Geoffrey of Monmouth and Sir Thomas Malory. Typically, with characters of the original source material either cast as various characters from the legends of king Arthur such as the king himself, Sir Lancelot, Merlin the Wizard, the Black Knight, etc., or reimagined as their own separate characters living in the kingdom of Camelot or a similar Arthurian realm. This AU scenario can be considered a sub-scenario of the Fairy-tale AU or fantasy AU.

Aristocats AU

The Aristocats AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the roles of the characters from the 1970 animated Disney film, The Aristocats. Typically, with the characters are portrayed as cats. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Cats AU.

Artist AU

The artist AU is an AU where one or more of the characters from the original source material are reimagined as artists. Typically, those who work in painting, sculpture, digital, etc., This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the modern AU.

Assassins AU

Assassins AU, also known as the hitman AU, is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material are reimagined as contract killers. This is one of the more popular career-based AUs and is sometimes considered a sub-scenario of the Crime AU.

Assassins Creed AU

The Assassins Creed AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the videogame franchise Assassins Creed. Typically, reimagined as members of the Assassins Order.. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Assassins AU.

Asylum AU

The Asylum AU is an AU where characters from the original souce material are placed into the environment of an insane asylum. Typically, being portrayed as patients/inmates or doctors.

Aztec empire AU

The Aztec Empire AU, also known as the Triple Alliance AU or Ēxcān Tlahtōlōyān AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as people living in South America in one of three Nahua Altepetl city-states between 1428 and 1521.

Back to the Future AU

The Back to the Future AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the roles of characters from the 1985 to 1990 time travel film trilogy, Back to the Future. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the science fiction AU and the Time Travel AU.

The Bad Guys AU

The Bad Guys AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the roles of characters from the 2022 Dreamworks animated film The Bad Guys, based on the graphic novel series by Aaron Blabey. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Crime AU, the heist AU, and in some cases, the Hybrid AU or the Anthro Animal AU.

Bakery AU

The Bakery AU, also known as the baker AU or Bakery Employees AU, is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material are placed in a bakery environment and are portrayed either as bakers, bakery owners, or regular customers. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario in the modern AU and an alternative to the Coffee Shop AU.

Balto AU

The Balto AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the roles of characters from the 1995 animated adventure film Balto. Typically, with the characters portrayed as dogs or other animals featured in the film. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Animal AU, the Wolf AU and the Dogs AU.

Band AU

The Band AU, also known as the Band on Tour AU, Battle of the Bands AU, or Rock Band AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as members of a music band. This AU is considered a sub-scenario of the modern AU and the Musician AU.

Bar AU

The Bar AU, also known as the Bartender AU, Bar Employees AU, pub AU, or pub employees AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into a bar or pub environment, typically as bartenders, bar owners, or bar regulars. This AU scenario can be considered an alternative scenario to the coffee Shop AU or Cafe AU, as well as a sub-scenario of the Modern AU.

Barbie AU

The Barbie AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the iconic fashion doll Barbie. Typically, with the characters either being reimagined as Barbie dolls, or the characters being placed in the roles of direct-to-home media Barbie movies such as Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus, Barbie Island Princess, Barbie as The Princes and The Pauper, Barbie as Rapunzel, etc. this AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Toys AU.

Battle Royale AU

The Battle Royale AU, also known as the Battle royal AU (not to be confused with the wrestling type or video-game genre), is an AU where characters from the original source material are individuals placed into an arena of some kind and forced to fight each other, usually to the death, until only one is left standing. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the dystopian AU.

Beach AU

the beach A is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the environment of a seaside beach. Typically, with the source material characters either living near or right by the beach or frequenting the location.

Beatrix Potter AU

the Beatrix Potter AU, also known as the Peter Rabbit AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the universe of the children’s book The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. Typically, with the source material characters being portrayed as woodland animals, similar to the animal characters of the Tales of Peter Rabbit book. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Animal AU and the Cottagecore AU.

Beauty and the Beast AU

The Beauty and the Beast AU is an AU where characters from the source material are cast as characters from the original French fairy-tale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. Although, works within this AU and the AU as a whole usually take more inspiration from the 1991 Disney animated film version. This AU is considered an offshoot of the fairy-tale AU and, in some cases, the Disney AU.

Beetlejuice AU

The Beetlejuice AU is an AU where characters from the original source material play the role of characters from the 1988 Tim Burton fantasy horror comedy film of the same name and/or its broadway musical adaptation. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Tim Burton AU and the Ghost AU.

Belle AU

the Belle AU, also known as The Dragon and the Freckled Princess Au, is an Au where characters from the original source material are placed in the roles of characters from the 2021 Mamoru Hosoda animated science fantasy film, Belle. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario between cyberspace AU and the Beauty and the Beast AU.

Bending AU

The Bending AU, also Known as the atla AU or simply the Avatar AU (not to be confused with the James Cameron Avatar AU/Na’vi AU), is an AU where characters from the source material are all part of the universe of the Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender (and by extension, its sequel series, The Legend of Korra). Usually, most characters in the cast are portrayed as benders, people capable of manipulating one of the four natural elements of earth, fire, water, or air. Some characters can also be portrayed as non-benders. This AU can be considered an offshoot or sub-category of the Elements AU.

Biblical AU

The biblical AU, also known as the bible AU, bible story AU, or the old testament AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into a biblical world, typically with the source material characters playing the roles of characters from bible stories and Abrahamic mythology, or being placed in a biblical setting.

Big Hero 6 AU

The Big Hero 6 AU, also known as the bot-fighting AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the 2014 Disney animated film Big Hero 6, loosely adapted from the Marvel comic series of the same name. Typically, characters of the source material are placed in the roles of characters in the original 2014 film or are reimagined as characters living in San Fransokyo. Usually, being portrayed as students or graduates of San Fransokyo Tech and/or Botfighters. This AU scenario can be considered a sub-scenario of the modern AU, the Science fiction AU or the Robots AU.

Birds AU

The Birds AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as birds. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the animal AU.

Bishoujo AU

The Bishojo AU, also known as the bishōjo AU or bishojo AU, is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material are reimagined in the bishoujo, or “beautiful girl” character design aesthetic used in anime and manga.

Bishounen AU

The Bishounen AU, also known as the Bishōnen AU, is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material are reimagined in the Bishounen, or “beautiful youth (boy)” character design aesthetic used in anime and manga.

Bioshock AU

The Bioshock AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the gritty retro-futuristic video game series Bioshock. Typically, with the characters of the original source material either being placed in the roles of characters from either Bioshock, Bioshock 2, or Bioshock Infinite. Or reimagined as their own characters living in the Bioshock universe. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the science fiction AU or the dieselpunk AU.

Bodyguard AU

The Bodyguard AU is an AU where two characters from the original source material are reimagined as a bodyguard and their client.

Boarding school AU

The Boarding school AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed in a boarding school environment, where they are typically either cast as students or teachers. This AU scenario can be considered an alternative to the middle school AU and, in some cases, a sub-scenario of the modern AU.

Body horror AU

The Body Horror AU, also known as the biological horror AU or bio horror AU, is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined in the body horror genre. A subgenre of horror that deals with grotesque or psychologically disturbing violations of the body. Depending on the story, these violations may manifest through mutations, mutilations, gratuitous violence, disease, or unnatural body movements. This AU scenario can be considered a sub-scenario of the Horror AU.

Bonnie And Clyde AU

The Bonnie and Clyde AU is an AU where two or more characters are placed into the roles of real life bank robbers and murderer duo and couple Bonnie Elizebeth Parker and Clyde Chesnut Barrow. Or are otherwise reimagined as a similar criminal couple. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Crime AU and the 1930s AU.

Bookshop AU

The bookshop AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the environment of a bookshop, typically as people who work or own the bookshop or its customers. This AU scenario can be considered an alternative to the library AU or the Coffee Shop AU, as well as a sub-scenario in the Modern AU.

Breakfast Club AU

The Breakfast Club AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the roles of the characters from the 1985 teen coming-of-age comedy-drama film, The Breakfast Club. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the high school AU and the 1980s AU.

Broadway AU

The Broadway AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the environment of Broadway, usually as Broadway actors and performers. Alternatively, this AU can refer to any AU where characters from the source material are placed into the roles of characters from Broadway musicals such as Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, Les Miserables, Wicked, etc.  

Brother Bear AU

The brother bear AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the roles of characters from the 2003 Disney animated fantasy comedy-drama film Brother Bear. Typically, being portrayed as bears or humans turned into bears like the film's protagonists. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the animal AU.

Borrowers AU

The Borrowers AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as tiny people known as Borrowers from the 1952 fantasy novel by Mary Norton. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the fairies AU.

Bugs AU

The Bugs AU, also known as the insects AU or Bug’s Life AU, is an AU where characters from the original Source material are reimagined as insects and/or other arthropods. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Animal AU.

Cafe AU

The Cafe AU, also known as the restaurant AU, Diner AU, or food AU, is an AU where characters of the source material are reimagined as either working as staff at an eating establishment who prepare, serve and work with food or as regulars who frequent the establishment. This AU can sometimes be considered an offshoot of the Modern AU and an alternative to the Coffee shop AU.

Camp Half-blood AU

Camp half-blood AU, also known as Percy Jackson AU, Heroes of Olympus AU, Rick Riordan AU, Riordanverse AU, Kane Chronicles AU, and Magnus Chase AU, is an AU set within the world of Rick Riordan's YA mythological fantasy book series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as well as The Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series, as they are all part of the same universe. In the AU, characters from the original source material are all demigods who are training at Camp Half-Blood. Alternatively, characters from the original source material are placed into the roles of the main cast of characters from one or more of the book series in the Riodanverse. This AU scenario can be considered a sub-scenario of the mythology AU or Modern AU. As well as a sub-scenario of the magic school AU.

Candlepunk AU

The Candlepunk AU, also known as the Castlepunk AU, Middlepunk AU, Dungeonpunk AU, or Plaguepunk AU, is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined in the Candlepunk genre. A subgenre of science fiction and an aesthetic that combines technology and aesthetics of the late Middle Ages with retro-futuristic technology and post-modern sensibilities. This AU scenario can be considered a sub-scenario of the science fiction AU.

Cardcaptor Sakura AU

The Cardcaptor Sakura AU, also known as the CCS AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the 1996 to 2000 Clamp manga turned anime, Cardcaptor Sakura. Typically, with the original source material's characters being placed into the roles of characters from Cardcaptor Sakura or being reimagined as their own original Cardcaptor characters. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the magical girl AU.

Cats Don't Dance AU

The Cats Don’t Dance AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the roles of characters from the 1997 Lauren Faust directed animated musical comedy-drama film, Cats Dont Dance. Or are otherwise re-imanged in the anthro animal artstyle of the film. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the cats AU, anthro animal AU, or the hybrid AU.

Cattlepunk AU

The cattlepunk AU is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined in the genre of Cattlepunk. A subgenre of science fiction and an aesthetic that combines technology and aesthetics of the American frontier and the Wild West with retro-futuristic technology and post-modern sensibilities. This AU scenario can be considered a sub-scenario of the science fiction AU and an offshoot of the Steampunk AU.

Celebrity AU

The Celebrity AU is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material are reimagined as modern-day celebrities. This AU scenario can be considered a sub-scenario of the modern AU.

Centaur AU

The centaur AU is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material are reimagined as centaurs. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the mythology AU and the Fantasy AU.

Celtic AU

The Celtic AU, also known as the highlands AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as people living in the Scottish Highlands,Typically, during the 10th century.

Chef AU

The Chef AU is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material are reimagined as chefs. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the modern AU.

Cinderella AU

The Cinderella AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined in the roles of the Fairytale Cinderella. This AU can be considered an offshoot of the Fairytale AU.

Circus AU

The Circus AU, also known as the Freak Show AU or Carnival AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as circus performers.

City AU

The City AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as residence of a big city. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Modern AU.

Clockpunk AU

The clockpunk AU, also known as the Machinepunk AU, is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined in the genre of Clockpunk. An aesthetic and sub-genre of science fiction that combines clockwork technology, usually that of the 14th to 17th centuries, with retro-futuristic technology and post-modern sensibilities.

Coffee shop AU

The coffee shop AU, formally known as the Barista AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into a coffee shop environment. Typically, either as staff members, business owners, or regular customers. The Coffee shop AU is considered one of the most popular AU scenarios of all time, along with the High school AU and the Modern AU, the latter of which the Coffee Shop AU can be considered a sub-scenario of.

College AU

The College AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into a contemporary college environment, typically as students or college professors. This AU scenario can be considered an alternative to the High School AU and a sub-scenario of the Modern AU.

Community Theatre AU

The community theatre AU, also known as the community theatre troupe AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as actors and performers attending community theatre. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the modern AU.

Con artist AU

The Con Artist AU is an AU where one or more characters are reimagined as con artists.

Corpse Bride AU

The Corpse Bride AU is an AU where characters from the original source material play similar roles to the characters from the 2005 Tim-Burton stop-motion dark musical fantasy animated film Corpse Bride. This AU can be considered a Sub-scenario of the Tim Burton AU.

Crossover AU

The crossover AU is a type of AU that combines stories, characters, settings, or elements of two or more different source materials together. Usually, this comes in the form of the different properties coexisting in a shared universe or characters from one or more properties playing the roles of characters from another, among other scenarios. This AU can be used as an umbrella term to describe a number of different AU scenarios.

Coraline AU

The Coraline AU is an AU where characters from the original source material play similar roles to characters in the 2009 Laika Studios Stop Motion animated Film Coraline. Adapted from the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name.

Cosmic Horror AU

The Cosmic Horror AU is an AU where the source material and characters from it are reimagined in the cosmic horror genre. A subgenre of horror that incorporates science fiction elements and emphasizes the horror of the unknowable and incomprehensible. Often dealing with the themes of cosmic dread, forbidden or dangerous knowledge, non-human influences on humanity and life, insanity, and existentialism. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the horror AU and the Science Fiction AU.

Cottagecore AU

The Cottagecore AU is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined with the theme of cottagecore. An online aesthetic and subculture that celebrates an idealized version of rural life, centering on traditional rural clothing, architecture, and interior design. As well as crafts and activities such as gardening, foraging, baking, and pottery.

Co-workers AU

Magical Girlfriend AU

The magical girlfriend AU, also known as the magical boyfriend AU or magical s/o AU, is an AU where the original source material or its characters are reimagined in the magical girlfriend genre. A subgenre of sci-fi/fantasy anime and manga where an Everyman main character who, through a twist of fate, has a person enter their life who is non-human or possesses some kind of superhuman ability. Where they both get into some wacky hi-jinks due to their magical powers, become close to one another, and eventually fall in love. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the fantasy AU or sci-fi AU.

Maid AU

The Maid AU, also known as the Maidservant AU, Housemaid AU, or Buttler AU, is an AU where one or more characters from the original source material are reimagined as domestic servants to another character. Sometimes, being portrayed wearing traditional maid uniforms.

Mario AU

The Mario AU, also known as the Super Mario AU or Super Mario Bros. AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the Super Mario Brothers franchise. Typically, with the source material characters either playing the roles of the main characters of the video games/movies, or being reimagined as their own characters existing in the Mario Bros universe.

Major Character Death AU

The major character death AU, also known as the main character death AU, main character dies AU, or death AU, is an AU where the original source materials plot is rewritten so that one or more characters who remained alive in canon are killed off. With the fallout of their death usually being explored in the AU’s story.

Mamma Mia! AU

The Mamma Mia! AU is an AU where characters from the original source material play similar roles to those from the jukebox musical turned musical romantic comedy film Mamma Mia!. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Musical AU.

The MArtial Arts AU, also known as the Dragon Warriors AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as warriors of Martial-Arts, Kung Fu, and Karate etc.

Marvel AU

The Marvel AU, also known as the MCU AU, marvel comics AU or marvel superheroes AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as living in the universe of Marvel Comics (though most content related to this AU tends to take more inspiration from the Marvel cinematic universe). Usually with either the characters being placed in the roles of iconic marvel heroes like Wolverine, Spiderman, the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, etc., or are reimagined as their own characters and heroes living in the Marvel universe. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the superheroes AU.

Marvel Avengers AU

The Marvel Avengers AU, also known as the Avengers AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as members of Marvel Comics’s superhero team, The Avengers. Usually, this comes in the form of either the cast of the source material playing the roles of iconic Avengers members like Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow Etc, or the source material characters being reimagined as their own new superheroes working alongside the canon Avengers members. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the superheroes AU and an offshoot of the Marvel AU.

The Mary Poppins AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed in the roles of characters from the 1964 Disney-produced musical fantasy film Mary Poppins.

Mass Effect AU

The Mass Effect Au is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the military sci-fi role-playing third-person shooter video game franchise. Typically, with the characters of the source material either playing the roles of characters from the mass effect games or being reimagined as characters that exist in the mass effect universe. The Maze Runner AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the YA dystopian science fiction novel series, The Maze Runner (and/or its film adaptations). The Mechs AU, also known as the Mecha AU, Super Robot AU, or Real Robot AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material live in a world where giant robots are commonplace in areas such as battle and warfare. In the AU, characters are typically portrayed as controlling the mechs either remotely or directly as pilots. Using their mechs to fight supervillains, giant monsters, other mechs, or other powerful threats. The Men in Black AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as men in black, government agents that deal with extraterrestrials and/or other supernatural entities. Typically, this AU takes the most inspiration from the Men in Black film franchise based loosely on the 1990-91 comic series. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the science fiction AU, the Modern AU, and the Crime AU.

Mermaids AU

The mermaids AU, also known as the Merfolk AU, Merpeople or Undersea AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as mermaids and/or other mythical or fantasy merfolk.

The mice AU, also known as the rodent AU or rats AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as anthropomorphic rodents. Typically, mice or rats. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the animal AU or anthro animal AU.

Micheal Bay AU

Micheal Bay AU, also known as the Bayverse AU, is an AU where the original source material and characters from it are reimagined in the style of Hollywood film director Micheal Bay. Usually, with characters playing the roles of characters from Bay’s movies, such as Con Air or his version of the live-action Transformers movies, or through the source material being reimagined in the style of Bay’s films.

Middle earth AU

Middle Earth AU, also known as The Lord of the Rings AU, The Hobbit AU, or the Tolkinverse AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as living in the high fantasy universe of Middle Earth created by author J.R.R. Tolkien. Mythological Pantheon AU, also known as the mythic pantheon AU, Pantheon AU, or gods AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as gods in a pantheon, similar to other polytheistic pantheons such as those of Geek Mythology, Egyptian Mythology, Norse Mythology, etc. Either characters are placed in the roles of the previously mentioned, already existing gods or are reimagined as their own pantheon of gods.

Naga AU

The Naga AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as Naga. a divine race from hindu and buddist mythology who are typically portreyed as half human half snake people with the upper half of a human and serpentine lower half of a snake. Nutcracker AU

The Nutcracker AU, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King AU, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms AU, is an AU where characters from the source material play the roles of characters from the 1816 short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann, and its many adaptations. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the fairy tale AU.

Omegaverse AU

The Omegaverse AU, also known as the Alpha/Beta/Omega AU or the ABO AU, is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined as being a part of the Omegaverse. A sub-genre of fanfiction where humans, usually males, are sorted into two or three main roles based loosely on outdated theories about the societal and mating hierarchies of wolves. With there being at least three prominent roles (depending on the work): Alphas, who tend to be more dominant and aggressive and can impregnate the omega class, the Omegas, who tend to have a more submissive demeanor and are able to be impregnated regardless of their gender, and Betas, who are closer in both biology and behavior to average humans. Most works in ABO are explicit and erotic in nature, but some safe-for-work examples do exist.

Orphanage AU

The Orphanage AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the environment of an orphanage. Typically, with the source material characters being placed in the roles of young orphans or their caretakers. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the agebend AU and children AU.

Orpheus and Eurydice AU

The Orpheus and Eurydice AU is an AU where characters from the original source material play the roles of characters from the tragic greek folktale Orpheus and Eurydice. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Greek Mythology AU.

Over the Garden Wall AU, also known as OTGW AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the roles of characters from the 2014 Patrick McHale/Cartoon Network animated dark fantasy comedy drama mystery adventure miniseries, Over The Guarden Wall. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Dark Fantasy AU.

Overwatch AU

The Overwatch AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the 2016 First Person Shooter game, Overwatch. Typically, with the characters of the source material either playing the roles of characters from the games, such as Tracer, Mcree, Winston, etc or being reimagined as their own characters existing in the Overwatch Universe. Usually, with them portrayed as heroes of the Overwatch team or villains of Talon.        

Owl House AU

The Owl House AU, also known as the Boiling Isles AU, is an AU where characters of the original source material are placed into the world of the animated Disney channel fantasy horror-comedy series, The Owl House. The Pacific Rim AU, also known as the Jaeger pilots AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed in the world of the 2013 Guillermo Del Toro Sci-fi monster film, Pacific Rim. Usually with the characters either playing the roles of characters from the original movie or reimagined as their own original Jaeger pilots. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Mech AU.

The paranormal AU, also known as the supernatural AU, is an AU where the original source material or its characters are reimagined with paranormal elements. Inserting elements and tropes related to unexplainable creatures and phenomena like ghosts, vampires, werewolves or shapeshifters, individuals with extra sensory perception (or ESP), and cryptids.

Paranormal horror AU

The paranormal horror AU, also known as the occult horror AU, is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined in the paranormal horror genre. A subgenre of horror that utilizes elements paranormal in its plot or to induce fear in the audience. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the paranormal AU and the horror AU.

Parents AU

The Parents AU is an AU where one or more characters are placed in the roles of being parents to one or more children. With the children in question typically being either another character from the source material (usually a teen or child character) or an original character.

PenPals AU

The penpals AU is an AU where two or more of the orignial source material’s characters are reimiagined as not knowing eachother in person and instead as penpals who write to eachother. In most cases, this AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Modern AU.

Personality Swap AU

Personality Swap AU is an AU where characters from the original source material have their personalities swapped with each other. For example, an introverted and grumpy character having the personality of the extroverted and peppy character and vice versa. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Role Swap AU.

Peter Pan AU

The Peter Pan AU, also known as the Neverland AU, is an AU where characters play the roles of characters from the 1904 play turned 1911 novel Peter Pan; or, The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. With most versions of this AU taking the most inspiration from the 1953 animated Disney adaptation. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the fairytale AU and Pirates AU.

Pet Store AU

The Pet Store AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the environment of a pet store. Typically, being cast as either employees, customers, or potential pet animals. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Modern AU and the Animal AU.

Phantom of the Opera AU

The Phantom of the Opera AU is an AU where characters from the original source material play the roles of characters from the serialized 1909 – 10 Gothic Horror mystery Romance novel by Gaston Leroux. With most versions of the AU taking the most inspiration from the Andrew Lloyd Webber mega-musical adaptation. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the dark AU.

The Pinocchio Au is an AU where characters from the original source material play the roles of characters from the 1883 children's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Fairytale AU.

The Pirates of the Caribbean AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the fantasy swashbuckler film series Pirates of the Caribbean, based on the Disneyland theme park ride, typically, with the source material characters playing the roles of characters from the films or being reimagined as characters existing in the world of Pirates of the Caribbean. Pizzeria AU, also known as the Pizza Place AU, Pizzeria employees AU or Pizza Shop AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the environment of a contemporary pizzeria. Ponified AU

The Ponified AU, also known as the My Little Pony AU, MLP AU, or ponies AU, is an AU where the main characters of the original source material are portrayed as characters existing in the universe of the fantasy comedy animated series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Based on the My Little Pony toyline by Bonnie Zacherly and Hasbro. Usually, this AU involves the main characters being redesigned as pony characters. This AU can be considered  a sub-scenario of the anthro animal AU.

Post-apocalypse AU

The post-apocalypse AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the environment of post-apocalyptic fiction. A sub-genre of speculative fiction focusing on characters' struggle for survival after a cataclysmic, society-collapsing event. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the science fiction AU or the Dark AU.

Pretty Cure AU

The Pretty Cure AU, also known as the Glitter Force AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the magical girl series, Pretty Cure. Typically, this involves characters of the source material playing the roles of characters from the series, or being reimagined as their own Pretty Cure magical girls. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Superhero AU or Magical Girl AU.

The Reincarnation AU, also known as the Past lives AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material die but are reborn in a new life, typically vaguely remembering certain aspects of their past life or retaining some traits from their last incarnation.

Rescuers AU

The Rescuers AU, also known as the Rescue Rangers AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the 1977 animated Disney adventure comedy-drama film, The Rescuers, based on the children’s novel of the same name by Margery Sharp. A sub-genre of comedy and slice-of-life stories that usually focus on light-hearted, funny plot lines with a strong focus on romance and romantic relationships. The Romeo & Juliet AU is an AU where characters from the original source material play the roles of characters from the romantic drama play Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Shakespearean AU and Fairy Tale AU.

Typically, either through characters playing the roles of characters from Shakespeare’s plays such as Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream etc., or through the original source material being reimagined in the bards writing style.

The Shape of Water AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the 2017 Guillermo del Toro-directed romantic fantasy film The Shape of Water. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Monster AU and Mermaid AU.

Shrek AU

The Shrek AU is an AU where characters from the original source material play the roles of characters from the Dreamworks Animated fantasy comedy film series Shrek. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Fairy Tale AU.

A category of Japanese anime and manga aimed primarily at young teenage boys between the ages of 12 and 18. While the category can encompass a wide variety of genres, Shounen tends to most commonly feature tropes and themes such as high action, humorous plots, martial arts, Sci-fi, fantasy and/or mythological elements, sports, and an emphasis on friendship and camaraderie between friends and teammates.

Shojo AU

The Shojo AU, also known as the Shōjo AU, is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined in the style of Shojo. A category of Japanese anime and manga aimed primarily at teenage girls and young women between the ages of 12 and 18. While the category can encompass a wide variety of genres, Shojo tends to most commonly feature tropes and themes of emotion, romance, friendship, character growth, and emotional melodrama.

A sub-genre of comedy television centered on a fixed set of characters who mostly carry over from episode to episode. This AU can also be used as an umbrella term for AUs where characters play the roles of characters from popular sitcoms such as the Simpsons, Seinfeld, Suite Life of Zack and Cody, etc.

Slasher AU

The slasher AU, also known as the Serial Killer AU, Slasher villain AU, Slasher horror AU or slasher movie AU, is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined in the genre of Slasher. A sub-genre of horror films that use the idea of a murderer stalking and killing others to illicit fear in the audience. This AU typically takes the form of either the characters from the original source material playing the roles of characters from slasher films like Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Child’s Play, etc., or being reimagined as slasher villains/serial killers or survivors. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the horror AU.

Small town AU

The small-town AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are all reimagined as residents living together in a small-town community. This AU scenario can be considered a sub-scenario of the modern AU and an alternative to the neighbours AU.

Smurfs AU

The Smurfs AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as Smurfs from the comic series of the same name by Pierre "Peyo" Culliford.

Snoopy AU

The Snoopy AU, also known as the Charlie Brown AU or Peanuts AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the comic strip series Peanuts by Charles Shultz. Typically, with the characters being redesigned in the art style of the Peanuts characters.

Social Media AU

The social media AU, also known as the Online friends AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the social media environment. Usually, with either the events of the original source material’s story being reimagined as taking place through the character’s interactions on a social media platform or characters from the original source material being reimagined as social media users or famous online personalities or influencers. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Modern AU.

Sonic the Hedgehog AU

The Sonic, the Hedgehog AU, also known as the Sonic AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into one of the worlds of the video game turned multi-media franchise Sonic the Hedgehog. Typically, this involves characters from the source material either playing the roles of characters from the games, animated series, comic lines, and/or films or characters being reimagined as their own characters existing in the Sonic universe. Usually, portrayed as anthropomorphic animals. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Anthro Animal AU.

Soul Eater AU

The Soul Eater AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into the world of the Dark comedy/fantasy action manga/anime Soul Eater. Typically, this involves the source material characters either playing the roles of the characters from the series, or being reimagined as their own characters existing in the Soul Eater universe. Usually, portrayed as Weapon Meisters or sentient weapons.

Soulmates AU

The Soulmates AU is an AU where characters from the original source material are placed into a world where two or more of them are tied together by fate and destined to be together in the romantic or platonic sense. (though, romance tends to be the more popular primary focus).

South Park AU

The South Park AU is an AU where characters from the source material are placed into the world of the long-running adult animated comedy series, South Park. Typically, with the source material characters either being placed in the roles of the series characters or being redesigned in the South Park art-style.

Southern Gothic AU

The southern Gothic AU is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined with the theme of Southern Gothic. A literary subgenre and aesthetic inspired by 1800s southern American outfits and literary works. Which was originated from 19th and 20th-century southern authors such as Flannery O’Connor commenting on and criticizing their society's racism, sexism, classism, fixation on the past, and decaying economy. In the mid-2010s, the term evolved into a regional gothic subgenre and aesthetic with an emphasis on liminal space, modern American iconography, evangelicalism and, more controversially, hillbilly horror.

Space Opera AU

The Space Opera AU is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined in the genre of Space Opera. A subgenre of science fiction usually set in outer space or on an alien planet with an emphasis on grand scope and themes, large-scale action, and epic, risk-taking adventure. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the science fiction AU.

Space western AU

The space Western AU is an AU where the original source material and its characters are reimagined in the genre of Space Western. A subgenre of science fiction that takes the tropes and themes of Wild West fiction and implements them into an intergalactic science fiction setting. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Science Fiction AU and an alternative to the Wild West AU.

The species swap AU, also known as the species bend AU, is an AU where characters from the source material, typically a cast with one or more non-human characters, have their species swapped with one another. For example, the alien character is now reimagined as a human character and vice versa.

Spirited Away AU

The Spirited Away AU is an AU where characters from the original source material play the roles of characters from the 2001 Hayo Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli animated film Spirited Away. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Studio Ghibli AU.

Sports AU

The sports AU, also known as the athletes AU, is an AU where characters from the original source material are reimagined as athletes participating in a competitive sport such as soccer/football, baseball, basketball or hockey, etc. This AU can be considered a sub-scenario of the Modern AU.

Squid Game AU
