My dear Marczi,

As you say in your last letter, Gyula and Ilonka’s behaviour is appalling – and you’re right – it’s not worth having anything to do with them.^[1] To the letter about the portrait of Lucy^[2] which I sent Ilonka in early February – I have only now had a reply – via London – saying that her father will let me have the portrait of Lucy, which belongs to me – but nothing else about when – or how – and that her husband^[3] sends his regards – and despite the fact that I wrote about you, she doesn’t say a word about it – I have decided not to accept the picture and not to respond

to her letter – keeping quiet is the best policy because otherwise you would end up quarrelling with them, you must just come to London from Pest in the summer. I will be in Paris in the second half of June. You must come too and see my royal portraits at the Salon [3211][4220] and then together we will go over to London, during the day – you must see our house and our family and you can sort out your family affairs with a serious person, Paul. If Ilonka or Gyula asks whether you’ve heard from me about the picture, just say no, they will think that I am going to start making offers – I don’t want to write to them any more – or hear any more about them – all they do is bring shame on us and send their children to pester us

This is the thanks I get for everything I have done – they are strangers to me from now on – all they know how to do is wheedle. Dear old thing, I’m sorry to hear that the two pounds have gone missing – I definitely put them into the envelope – but since sending money from here is not allowed, they open up all registered mail and remove the money – and one can’t complain – because it’s illegal – so don’t say anything about it in your letter – say as little as possible because letters are now being opened – This time I’m enclosing a cheque for 200 French francs – write to let me know as soon as you receive it because the Post is slow. So give Lucy dinner. Lucy is looking forward to seeing you – don’t tell anyone, she sets off on the 14th and arrives in Vienna the next day at the same time as I did – look for the Bucharest carriage. Yesterday I finished the big picture of the king [4220] and started the portrait of the crown prince a dear boy [4218] – and I am doing two other smaller pictures of the king [3225][3222]. I’m horrifically

busy. The big portrait of Queen Marie [3211] – and the one of the king [4220] – will be shown to invited guests on the 17th of this month in the Royal Palace – Lucy will be present as well – and the next day they go off to the Paris Salon – I know they will be a roaring success for me. On the afternoon of the 18th we leave for Constantinople – we will be here for three days and then take the boat to Beirut, which takes two days and two nights – and from there to Jerusalem – it will be lovely – I am making a study of the road that Christ took – and painting impressions. I don’t think we’ll be in London before 20th April – So, God willing, we will spend Easter in the Holy Land.

Dr Preszly has written – to say that he’s going to Paris for a week in the second half of June. I received the supplement from Siklóssy^[4] today, buy the whole paper. I received a remittance notice to say that money had gone to Munich for you – write at once to let me know that you had confirmation of this,

Mint azt már utolsó leveledben írtál, Gyula s Ilonkaektól megdöbbentő – s igazad van – nem érdemes velük foglalkozni. Levelemre melyet Ilonkának írtam a Lucy képéről február elején – most kaptam – Londonon át választ – hogy apja a Lucy képét átengedi, mely engem illet – semmit mást hogy mikor – vagy hogyan – s férje is üdvözöl – mintának dacára  hogy rólad írtam egy szóval sem említ – Elhatároztam, hogy a képet el nem fogadom – s nem válaszolok

levelére – halgatni a legjobb miért velük néked is veszekedni, a nyáron Pestről Londonba fogsz jönni. Június második felébe Parisban leszek. Te oda jössz, látni fogod a Salonba királyi képeimet s együtt megyünk át nappal Londonba – kell hogy lássad Házunkat családunkat s el fogod egy komoly urral Paulival – családi ügyeidet intézni. Ha Ilonka vagy Gyula kérdezi, hallottál e tőlem a kép miadt azt mondod hogy nem – ők azt hiszik, hogy én most ajánlatokat fogok tenni – nem akarok nekik már írni – sem róluk tudni – csak szégyent hoznak s ma holnap ránk küldenék gyermekeiket

Ez a köszönet mindazért amit én tettem – teljes idegenek nekem – csak folyton hizelegni tudnak. Öregem sajnálom, hogy a két font eltűnt – bizton magam tettem a levelbe – de miután innét penzt nem szabad küldeni, felnyitják az ajánlot leveleket és kiveszik a pénzt – s nem reclamálhatod – mert jogtalan - tehát leveledben ne is szolj róla – minél kevesebbet mondani, mert kinyitogatnak leveleket most franzcia chequet küldök 200 frankról – s a mint megkaptad azonnal írjál, mert a Posta lassan megy. Tehát lásd el Lucyt vacsorával. Lucym örvend hogy látni fog – ne szólj senkinek, ő 14 én indul s másnap ugyan abban az idoben mint én Bécsbe érkezik – kérdesd a Bukaresti kocsit. Tegnap fejeztem be a király nagy képet – s megkezdtem a koronaherczeg arczkepét kedves fiu – s más két kissebb képet festek a királyról. Rettenetesen

vagyok elfoglalva – Maria királynő nagy képe – s a királye – e hó 17-a a Kir. Palotába lesz mighívot vendégek reszére  látható – melyen már Lucym is jelen lesz – másnap pedig – elindulnak a Parisi szalonba – Tudom oriási nagy sikerem lesz. Mi 18ikán délután indulunk Constantinápolyba – ott három napig leszünk s hajón két nap két éjszaka Beirútba – s onnét Jerusalembe – gyönyörű lesz – most tanulmányozom az utat melyen Christus járt – s festek impressiokat. Nem hiszem hogy 20ig Aprilis elott Londonba leszünk – Tehát  husvétot ott a Szentföldön eljük, Isten jó akaratával –

Dr. Preszly írt – hogy Parisba jön egy hétre június második felébe. Ma kaptam Siklóssytól a mellékletet vedd meg az egész lapot. Kaptam jelentést hogy münchenbe ment részedre penz – ird meg azonnal te kaptál a jelentést,
