Theory of Music

Sound: Characteristics:- Pitch, Volume, Timbre, Dynamics.

Notation: The Staff and the Clefs, Pitch Range of the Pipe Band Instruments, Leger Lines, Extending Notes and Rests, the Bar Lines and their meanings, Anacrusis.

Rhythm and Tempo: Duple, Triple and Quadruple Time, Simple and Compound Time, Dividing the Beat, Accepted Tempo for the March, Strathspey, Reel and Jig.

Music Writing

Write neatly, from memory, on the manuscript provided, a two parted Simple Time and a two parted Compound Time March.  The scores should incorporate a variety of rudiments, as those included in the Practical Section of this syllabus.

Where appropriate; Repeat marks, Embellishments and Dynamic marks should be shown.

Instrumental (Practical)

On Practice Chanter:

Play the Scale with High G and High A Grace Notes

Play Hand Changing exercises

Demonstrate the G,D,E Grace Note movement, at Jig tempo

Demonstrate the High G, C, Low A and Low G Strikes

Play the Light Throw, Doublings and Strike on D

Play Doublings on High A, High G, F, E C, B, Low A and Low G

Demonstrate the Birl on Low A

Demonstrate the Grip movement – Low A to B and Low A to C

Sight read, with a fair amount of accuracy, a Simple Time two parted March, provided by the examiner

On Bagpipe:

Display the ability to tune the Drones of the bagpipe.

Play proficiently a Simple Duple Time March, a Strathspey and Reel and a Compound  Time March, each of 2 parts or more.

The tunes must include a variety of Grace Notes and Doublings, as those included in the Practice Chanter Section of this syllabus. A score (of the settings to be played) must be submitted to the examiner.
