Newsletter February 2015

Welcome back to school everyone and welcome to the new students and teachers to our team.

Our new teachers are Ms Nicki MacKenzie teaching Yr 4 in Rm 12 and Miss Jessica Coad teaching Yr 5 in Rm 5.

This year our teachers are focusing on planning and teaching collaboratively with other teachers at similar levels.  You will see more evidence of this as the year progresses.

Learning Plans

All classes will be developing their Learning Plans in Week 1 and 2 of the term.  This is the time for us to develop our routines and procedures in classes around learning, our school CARE values and vision,”We are all lifelong learners who aspire to excellence”, the school rules and student learning dispositions.

We will be working  together, using Quality Thinking Tools to create a positive classroom environment for us to learn and succeed in throughout the rest of the year.

They will be coming home to families and whanau on Monday16 February (Yr 5 classes will be later that week due to camp).

BYOD (Bring Your Own Devices)

If your child is in Yr 5-8 they are able to complete an online BYOD licence, which when it is passed will enable them to bring a mobile device to school to assist their learning.  You will have all received a letter about this at the end of last year.  If you need to read that again you can find it here. The BYOD has been updated and will be available for students to complete now.  It will be linked on the class blog and we suggest students complete it at home, thus giving you an idea of what students are being asked to do.

Learning in Term 1

Our Integrated Learning focus is

Health, Science (Living World) and Social Science

  • Relationships with Others
  • Personal Health and Physical Development
  • Identity, Culture and Organisation
  • Living World - Our bodies, how they grow & what we need to grow

The Kauri students will be learning about “Keeping Ourselves Safe” using the Police Education programme and other related resources to guide this learning.

We will incorporate lessons on the Treaty of Waitangi this week as well and are working towards a focus on ANZAC day towards the end of the term and into Term 2 as well.

An Art Attack will take place later in the term with the purpose of creating and making murals on the theme of NZ icons, which will be displayed around our school.

Team Assemblies

Our team assemblies will be held every second Monday of the term in the School Hall commencing at 1.30 pm.  The dates for this term are:

16 Feb, 2, 16 and 30 March.  We encourage parents/whanau to join us as they are able.  We hope to see you there.  Our assemblies are a mix of sharing learning, celebrating successes, and having some fun and rivalry amongst our classes.

Kauri Team Newsletters are published 3 times a term in Weeks 1, 5 and 10.  The first one for each term is a team newsletter with some individual class information, the other 2 are class newsletters.  Newsletters are posted on class blogs and parents are notified when this happens.  Please let your child’s teacher know if you would prefer a paper copy instead of a digital copy.

That’s all from the team for now, the next newsletter will be from your class teacher and will come home in Week 5, 2-6 March.

Koru Games - Yr 7&8s

This year, all year 7 and 8 students will once again be given the opportunity to participate in the Koru Games. The Koru Games is a multi day, multi sports tournament for year 7 and 8 students.

While the games are competitive, there is also a strong culture of “Fair Play” that is reinforced and everyone is encouraged to get involved as much as possible.

The games are scheduled for 15 - 17 September 2015.

The sports included for 2015 are yet to be confirmed. At this stage however, it looks like we will be competing in Netball, Basketball, Touch and Soccer. If you think you may be able to help with trainings during the year, please see myself or Mr Muller as soon as possible. We will also be looking for assistance from parents/families during the event, so please mark it down in your calendar if you think it is something you might like to be part of.

Yours faithfully

Bryan Brown, and Lance Muller
