FAQ

Q. How many pieces per category am I allowed to submit?

A. You may submit up to one (1) piece per category. You may submit to multiple categories; each submission is $15.

Q. Is it possible to submit a piece that includes a voice part?

A. You may submit a work that includes a voice part, but its performance will depend on whether the singers we often work with are available for the festival.

Q. May I submit a piece that calls for more than one of any type of instrument?

A. We are generally able to contract additional string players, so it’s not a problem to submit a work for more than one of any type of string instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass). We prefer pieces with single winds/brass/percussion/harp/piano, but if a piece with multiple instruments is selected by our judges, we will consider programming it. However, we will not be able to program large choir and orchestra pieces.

Q. What about works for more than one piano?

A. Very rarely do we have access to more than one piano, so we would not recommend submitting a piece that calls for more than one piano.

Q. Is it all right to submit pieces that call for woodwind doublings?

A. Yes, you may submit a piece that calls for woodwind doublings: flute (piccolo, alto flute, bass flute), oboe (English horn), clarinet in Bb (clarinets in Eb, A, Alto, Bass and Contrabass), bassoon (contrabassoon)

Q. Is there a duration limit for each piece?

A. There is no duration limit, however, please note that our concerts generally run no longer than 75 minutes.

Q. Am I required to submit an audio or MIDI recording of my piece?

A. No, you are not required to submit a recording--audio or MIDI.

Q. May I submit a piece that has already been performed?

A. Yes, you may submit a piece that has already been performed and/or recorded.

Q. If my piece is selected, do I have to be present for the festival in June?

A. Yes, you must be in New York City and able to attend all festival events and concerts.

Q. What if I am unable to attend the festival?

A. Your piece will not be performed if you are unable to attend the festival.

Q. Will ensemble mise-en be able to provide any kind of financial support for housing or travel?
