Tri-Way

Sunday 28 October

at Whittlesey

The annual Whittlesey Tri-Way took place at the Indoor Bouledrome between East Midlands, Chiltern and Anglia on the 28th October. Each squad was made up of five senior teams and one junior team. Unfortunately the East Midlands squad was short of a couple junior players who had made other commitments and had to borrow from Chiltern. East Midlands finished 2nd, narrowly beating Anglia, but the overall winning Region for the seventh year running was Chiltern

Stimpson Autumn Trophy

Sunday 21 October

Lincoln Branleys PC

The Lincoln Pétanque club held its annual Autumn Doubles on the 21st October this year. The format was a five game snake with the trophy given to the top team. In third place were Mark Binley and Tony Moulding, in second place were Joe Sheffield and Stone Williams. The outright winners, being the only team to win all five games, were Chris Ratcliffe and Neil Cox from the Bulls Head, Wilson

EPA Champion of Champions

12/13 October

at the Plough, Ratby

DOUBLES (Saturday 12th) This year the Champion of Champions was held at the Plough Ratby within the East Midlands Region. The winners and runners up from the Closed Regional Doubles were sent to represent the region; these were Ian Binley with Christian Seville (East Midlands 1) and Mark Binley with Tony Moulding (East Midlands 2). The format was two groups of 10/11 teams, with the top two from each group after four games going through to play in the Semi Finals. Mark and Tony just missed out on the Semi-Finals, finishing on equal wins/points difference as second place, but missing out by points scored. Ian and Christian won all four games and finished top of their group. Unfortunately they lost 13-10 in the Semi Final to the eventual winners, Chris Peel and Serge Raja (Anglia) who beat Matt Eversden and Miles Gooda (Chiltern) in the Final 13-6

TRIPLES (Sunday 13th) The Champion of Champions Triples representatives for the region were Clare Brooks, Kath Brooks and Stone Williams (East Midlands 1) and Doug Mclean, Adam Ball and Christian Seville (East Midlands 2). The format played was the same as for the doubles, the day before. Both East Midlands teams made it through to the Semi Finals facing against each other. Doug, Adam and Christian came out on top against Clare, Kath and Stone winning 13-4. The Final was played against Matt Eversden, Jon Sewell & Phil Winston  (Chiltern) with East Midlands winning 13-10 in the Final. Congratulations to Doug, Adam and Christian who are the 2012 English Pétanque Triples Champions of Champions!

LPA Mixed Doubles

Sunday 07 October

at the Queen Vic, Syston

Ten teams entered the LPA Mixed doubles held at the Queen Vic in Syston. The pub provided good meals which were reasonably priced and were serving Tea and Coffee early in the morning. Finishing runners up with four wins were Pat Summers and Sue Lawrence. The overall winners with five wins were Mark Granatowicz and Lisa Edmondson

Regional Singles, Shooting and Pointing

Sunday 30 September

at the Willow in Thurmaston

Only nine players took part in the Regional Singles, Shooting and Pointing this year, held at the Willow in Thurmaston. The Pointing champion was Stone, Shooting champion was Christian and the Singles champion was also Stone. Runner Up in the Shooting was Gavin who will represent East Midlands along with Christian at the EPA Champion of Champions later in the year

Monk Trophy

Sunday 23 September

at the Willow, Thurmaston

The EMPA Monk Trophy is a three-way friendly competition involving players from each of the East Midlands Pétanque Association, the Rutland & District Pétanque League and the 1990 League in a mixed mêlée format. This year the event was organised by the Rutland League chairman Lyndon Whittaker and held at the Willow in Thurmaston, with eight players taking part from each association. £91 was raised for charity

EPA Inter Regional Championship and Challenge Tournament

Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September

at Mill Rythe, Hayling Island, Hampshire

The Inter Regional Championships were held at Hayling Island for the first time this year, and the new venue was very well received by the majority of members. Everything ran smoothly including the weather!

Championship The East Midlands Teams were in Division 1 of ‘The Main’ and finished a respectable 4th place but were well beaten by the country’s top regions. In 3rd place were Kent, in 2nd place Southern and, retaining their championship title, Chiltern

Challenge The East Midlands Challenge Teams played in Division 2 this year after being relegated from Division 1 last year. With the goal of bouncing straight back to Division 1, the challenge teams got off to a great start with 22/28 wins on the Saturday. Finishing in 3rd place was Kernow, in 2nd place and promoted back to Division 1 were East Midlands, beaten only by a very strong combined team made up of reserve players from Chiltern and Southern Regions

Juniors The Under 18s had their own tournament for the first time this year and the East Midlands youngsters performed very well finishing in 5th place and separated only by points difference from 3rd place Isle of Wight. In 2nd place were Southern and in 1st place, Eastern

Regional Triples

The 2102 Regional Triples competition was held at the Plough Ratby PC this year with eleven teams entering (and one withdrawing). The Winners were Clare, Kath and Stone who qualify, with the Runners Up, Doug, Adam and Christian, for the EPA Champion of Champions in October

Morcott  Bank Holiday Mêlée

27 August

White Horse, Morcott, Rutland

Thirty-three players took part in the annual Morcott Melée held on the 27th August bank holiday Monday. The rain held off for most of the day until the finals were being played. Of the eight players who made it through to the Knockout phase, the losing semi-finalists were Wendy O'Brien, Christian Seville, Nigel Ashby and Mark Binley. Runners up Iris Scullion and Neil lost 13-6 in the final to Sam Twiddy and Ian Binley. Ian has made the final in the last four consecutive years, winning three of them. £135 was raised to be split between Help for Heroes and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance

EPA Womens Triples

Sunday 19 August

Harrow PC

Congratulations to Sabrina Seville who, with some friends from Southern Region, Debbie Elcome and Sammy Thatcher, won the EPA Womens Triples championship at Old Lyonian Sports and Social Club, home of London Region’s Harrow Pétanque Club and will now represent England in the Ladies European championship in Ghent, Belgium this November
