De László painted two portraits of Lady Johnstone in 1905 [7418] [7426]. This rejected portrait remained in his studio until 1927, when he used the other side of the board to paint a study portrait of his friend Baron Slatin Pasha [7178]. This caused some amusement for the Baron, who wrote to the artist: “‘I am sending a photo of my girl, made by an amateur- which is quite good – A photo of the wonderful sketch of [sic] kindly made of me and the photo of the Lady, who is on my back – always tickling me and to whom I have never been introduced – I [sic] would be very kind of you, if you would let me know her name!”[1]
