Immune system Unit Plan

Grade:

10

Content Area:

Immune System and body systems

Course Name:

Biology

Unit:

Unit 7 Immune System

Description of Unit: During this unit students will learn about homeostasis through the lens of individual body systems as well as a brief overview on each organ system. Students will also be learning about the functions of the immune system, vaccination and how that plays a role in immunity and lastly, learning about what can happen when the immune system doesn’t function properly. There are videos, readings, simulations and application projects associated with this unit.

Approximate Time Needed:

At least 4 weeks

  • Depending on extension activities and additional body systems- could take up to 7-8 weeks

Resources

7.1 Body systems and homeostasis: I can describe how the body maintains homeostasis through the work of organ systems.

7.2: Immune system I can describe the structures and function of the immune system

7.3: Vaccines: I can describe the development and importance of vaccines

7.4: Autoimmune disorders and allergies: I can explain how the body attacks healthy cells/foreign particles to cause autoimmune disorders/allergies

Student Background Knowledge:

As this is the last unit of the year, students are expected to have an understanding of the scientific method. Students will assess their knowledge of the benchmarks before each lesson, before formative assessments, and before the summative assessment.

Essential Questions:

Lesson 1: How do our organ systems work together to maintain homeostasis?

Lesson 2: How does our body protect itself from pathogens?

Lesson 3: How does a vaccine protect us?

Lesson 3: What happens if when a group of people decide not to vaccinate their children?

Lesson 4: What happens when the immune system makes a mistake?
