Money Cylinders Activity

Materials

Lesson

Have students roll different sized cylinders out of paper using each coin as the size of the cylinder (around the base). Begin with the cylinder rolled around the penny. Have students estimate how many pennies would be needed to fill the cylinder if stacked from the bottom (on the inside) up. Have students place pennies on top of each other until the cylinder is full. Then, have student find the actual volume by measuring the diameter of the base and the height of the cylinder and calculating. Repeat with the cylinder made from each type of coin, discussing estimated volume versus actual volume.
