BCNU Open Letter Calling for Ceasefire
Dear BCNU Provincial Executive,
As health care workers, we are devastated by the crisis in Gaza. We are heartbroken over the more than 10,000 Palestinian and 1400 Israeli civilians that have lost their lives since the Hamas attack on October 7 and the Israeli bombardment and siege of the Gaza strip.
In light of this quickly escalating violence in Israel/Palestine, the BCNU must join the call of our health care colleagues in Palestine and coalitions across this country representing over 150 labour, faith, and civil society organizations demanding an IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE and an END TO THE SIEGE on Gaza.
As we try to contemplate this loss of life, including the lives of over 4000 Palestinian children, we are particularly alarmed by the toll on our health care colleagues in Gaza–over 70 of whom have lost their lives– and the targeting of ambulances and health care facilities. On October 26, Doctors Without Borders called for an immediate ceasefire, writing “It’s time to end the indiscriminate bloodshed and the massive attacks on Gaza.” No health care worker nor any other civilian is safe as long as the bombardment and siege continues.
We call on the BCNU to:
- Call for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the siege on Gaza
- Support unrestricted access to humanitarian aid
- Join over 150 other Canadian organizations and endorse ceasefirenow.ca
For a lasting peace, we must support Palestinians and Israelis to invest in a society that is built on human rights, participation, equity and an end to the illegal occupation.
