2016 NOVA Open Prelude: Horus Heresy Asymmetrical Campaign Primer

Prelude: Horus Heresy Asymmetrical Campaign
 Friday, September 2, 2016

Overview

The Warmaster Horus has sent an invasion force of traitor Astartes to assault and occupy the Forge World Hephaestus IV. Before descending on the planet itself, the fleet is ordered to attack the moon Euthenia and seize the promethium wells and refineries located there. Cunningly, The traitor fleet emerges from the warp near Euthenia while the moon is hidden from Hephaestus IV by it’s larger sister moon Eukleia. Cut off and unable to communicate with Hephaestus IV, the modest force defending Euthenia is surely doomed. With luck and determination though, the loyalist defenders may be able to sabotage the promethium production and evacuate the moon to warn Hephaestus IV.

Format

Prelude will be a three-game FRIENDLY campaign and each game will pit forces of unequal size against one another. Players will be split into Loyalist and Traitor, so that each side has an equal number of players. We’ll certainly try and accommodate everyone’s first choice, but it may happen that you don’t get first pick. Games will be deliberately unbalanced but the smaller forces will be able to win games by achieving certain objectives before they are wiped out.

Players will bring three different army lists with differing point sizes (500-750-1000) and before each round, event staff will announce what size force the Loyalists and the Traitors will use. The results of each round will determine the size of the forces used by each side in the next round.

Forces

All Armies will be Battle Forged and will be constructed using the army rules found within the Forge World Horus Heresy Books. You may also use any Forge World units with official rules on the Forge World website. Rules listed as experimental may not be used. Note: New Horus Heresy Legion Astartes: Age of Darkness book rules WILL be used, please update lists as needed!

Three different army lists will be required for this escalation campaign; they are as follows: 500 points, 750 points and 1000 points. All army lists will use the Combatant force organization chart on page 169 of The Horus Heresy: Book I. (1-2 HQ, 0-2 Elites, 1-3 Troops, 0-2 Fast Attack and 0-1 Heavy Support.)

RESTRICTIONS:

Materials

Each player must bring typed, printed copies of their army lists for the tournament staff and your opponents. We suggest 5 copies of each army list.

You must bring any rulebooks, dice, templates, and markers you need to facilitate playing your army.

General Rules

Game results are determined by scoring primary and secondary objectives as given for each mission. Refer to each Scenario Result Sheet for how to calculate Victories, Draws and Defeats.

Scoring Units

All armies will be Battle-forged, every unit in the force counts as scoring - unless a unit's special rules specifically state otherwise. Troops choices and units with the Implacable Advance special rule count as having the Objective Secured rule. Please note that recent FW updates have given Legion Veteran and Seeker Squads as well as Alpha Legion Headhunter Kill Teams and Mor Deythan Strike Squads the Implacable Advance special rule.

Non-Scoring Units

The following units will not count as scoring or denial units, for the purposes of holding objectives:

5 Minute Warning

Players should continue to start new game/player turns until the final five (5) minute warning. After the five (5) minute warning has been announced, NO additional game turns shall be started – there will be no exceptions! If the current game turn has not been completed when time has expired, the game will be afforded a grace period in order to finish out the current game turn. This grace period will extend into the break periods and should be reconciled as quickly as possible. The judges reserve the right to end any game that is taking too long to resolve.

Variable Game Length

All missions will use the Variable Game Length rule.

Falling Back

Units that fall back move directly towards their own table edge by the shortest route possible as described in the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook (pg. 30). As per the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook (pg 122-123), units that are falling back cannot control/deny objectives. Warlords that are falling back at the end of the game are NOT considered slain and do not fulfill the requirements of the Slay the Warlord Secondary Objective.

Very Special Die

You will receive one very special, six-sided die with their swag; you will know it when you see it. During every Assault Phase, when each unit rolls to wound, it should replace one of their dice with the very special die. Any six rolled with the very special die in a roll to wound will ignore armor saves.

Experimental Template Weapon

Each player will receive one (flamer-style) template with an envelope attached. This template is to be used for a One-Shot Assault weapon that may be used once (and only once) in the entire campaign. To use the template:

  1. Assign it to any character model during your shooting phase. The weapon will be classified as an Assault type.
  2. Place the template. Normal rules for template weapons apply.
  3. Open the envelope, read the rules with your opponent.
  4. Fire!

Once the envelope has been opened, the weapon must be fired using the rules in the envelope. There will be a considerable variety of experimental weapons. Most will be pretty good. Some will be amazing! Some will be, ahem, not so good. Remember, these weapons may only fire one shot and only be used once in the campaign.

Battle Results

Refer to each Scenario Result Sheet for how to calculate Victories, Draws and Defeats

There will be a maximum of 30 possible Battle Points to earn in this event.

Sportsmanship

This is a FRIENDLY event and players are expected to abide by high standards of sportsmanship to ensure that everyone will have fun. A year from now, no one will remember who won this event, but everyone will remember their good opponents and their bad ones.

Players will grade each other with the following rubric. Players should only give their opponents anything less than a positive score if they really deserve it. Players who receive 2 or more negative sportsmanship marks will be disqualified from the event and will no longer be eligible to receive any awards.Players who are suspected of “dinging” their opponents on sportsmanship so they can move up in the rankings may also become ineligible to receive awards.

Positive

9 Points

Good (maybe even great!) game. Most of your opponents should receive this score. If a player hasn’t done something to receive a lower score, you should default to this one.

Ding

5 Points

While not completely awful, your opponent deserves to be marked down for sportsmanship. This could be for reasons including argumentativeness, playing deliberately slowly, questionable measuring or extreme lateness. Expect a discussion with an event judge if you give out this score often.

Negative

0 Points

This score should be reserved for truly bad games. This score should be given out if your opponent has a bad attitude, was exceptionally argumentative or was clearly cheating. Expect an event judge to follow up with you if you give out this score.

Each Favorite Opponent Vote will also be worth one Sportsmanship Point. There will be a maximum of 30 possible Sportsmanship Points to earn in this event.

Appearance

Beautifully painted armies are an important component of our hobby and as such, all armies MUST be full painted and be composed of Horus Heresy era models and/or appropriate conversions. Event organizers will be reasonable about interpreting this rule but do not show up with a standard Warhammer 40,000 army and expect to play in this event. Appearance will be judged with the following rubric.

Army Appearance Score (Circle the one that applies)

Army Appearance Score (Circle the one that applies)

15

22

An exceptional army with extremely well-executed highlighting and shading, attention to detail, nice bases and an overall excellent presentation.
