What is Vicarious Trauma:

Vicarious trauma is the emotional residue from witnessing or being exposed to traumatic events.

Signs and Symptoms:

Vicarious trauma often carries many of the same symptoms as first-hand trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Behavioral symptoms

• Sleep disturbances
• Appetite changes
• Exaggerated startle response, “jumpiness”

Physical symptoms

• Panic symptoms – sweating, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, dizziness
• Aches and pains
• Weakened immune system

Cognitive symptoms

• Repetitive images of the trauma
• Confusion/disorientation
• Racing thoughts

Emotional symptoms

• Helplessness and powerlessness
• Numbness
• Anxiety
• Irritability
• Sadness
