This is a preparatory work for the formal portrait of the sitter [4030] which now hangs at Broadlands, Hampshire. It does not appear in the Studio Inventory compiled after de László’s death, as many of these preparatory oils did, indicating that he may have given it to an as yet unidentified previous owner.

It is thought that the artist may have inscribed the picture at a later date and confused the year as the finished picture was painted at the sitter’s home in Switzerland and is clearly dated: László F.E. / 1900 / IX / Rieder Furka V
