Beginning Band Professor Benzer Clinic March 24
Our Paredes Beginning Band students are presented with a tremendous opportunity to work with Professor John Benzer of the University of Houston. Mr. Benzer is a nationally renowned clinician and director, leading two middle school band to state champion Texas Honor Bands. His expertise is in working with beginning band students. He will be able to provide our kids with tremendous insight and opportunity for growth. This clinic will be taking place on Saturday, March 24th.
The event will take place at the Akins High School Band Hall
10701 South 1st St, Austin TX 78748
Woodwind instruments (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone) will report to the Akins Band Hall at 12:30. Their clinic will run from 1:15 until 2:15.
Brass instruments (Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba) and Percussion will report to the Akins Band Hall at 1:45. Their clinic will run from 2:30 until 3:30.
All students will be provided with a pizza lunch. This event is required of ALL students and will count as a performance grade. Students must turn in a permission slip. A parent email counts as a permission slip.
Parent Meeting March 22
We will be holding a parent meeting on Thursday, March 22nd to discuss and help plan our Ensemble Recital fundraiser. The meeting will take place from 6:00 to 6:30 at the Paredes Band Hall. Paredes Band Celebrates Success at UIL Concert & Sightreading Contest
Our Paredes Bands competed this week at our annual UIL concert and Sightreading Competition to great success. Our Wind Ensemble earned a first division Superior rating in both their Concert and Sightreading performances, resulting in a Sweepstakes award. This is the first sweepstakes award for Paredes in 4 years, and only the third in the school’s history. Symphonic band earned a 2nd division or “excellent” rating on their stage performance and a 1st division rating on their sight-reading. Our Concert Band received a 3rd division rating on their concert performance and a 2nd division rating on their sight-reading. We are all quite proud of all of our students’ hard work and well earned accomplishment.
World’s Finest Chocolate Bar Fundraiser has ended
Our fundraiser is almost over. Today (Monday) will be our last day of checking out boxes. We will not be able to take back partially sold boxes of chocolate. For every box sold, students will earn $30 for their band account to cover any outstanding band fees and their trip expense. Any student selling 3 boxes of chocolate will cover the full expense of their trip, provided all band fees have been covered. Please see the attached flyer for additional details. All cash is overdue!!
Our grading period is coming to a close in just a couple of weeks. Students are welcome to make up any performance grades for full credit, but must arrange to do so outside of class. As a reminder, the Paredes band hall is open from 7:20 am until 5:30 pm daily. If any student is in need of academic assistance, please see Mr. Hefler ASAP. We are happy to assist for any class.
Students have received an updated 2nd semester band fees page, outlining any expenses for our program. All students must be fully caught up on their outstanding band fees in order to participate in our End of Year Field Trip to 6 Flags Fiesta Texas. All fundraiser profits will be applied to settling any outstanding band fees.
The Paredes Middle School Band is very excited to now offer private lessons to our students. Private lessons allow students to get 1 on 1 attention from an expert on their instrument. This will give students a substantial advantage for meeting class expectations, making our most advanced bands at both Paredes and Akins, and thriving in events like all region auditions.
Private lessons do require a financial commitment from a parent. Lessons are generally $20 per week for a 30 minute session, but occasionally vary slightly depending on teacher. Lessons will generally take place either during a student’s band class or after school, depending upon student and teacher availability. If you are interested and willing to make the commitment, please respond to this email at your nearest convenience.
Odds & Ends
A recording of our fall and winter concerts can be heard online at soundcloud.com/paredesband. If any of you have better quality pictures/recordings/video, I would appreciate you sharing them with us. UIL recordings will be coming shortly.
If you have any pictures of our Paredes Band students in action, please send these to me as I would love to advertise our students as much as possible.
