De László had painted the sitter twice before, in 1908 [6233] & [6234], when he also painted her husband, Jonkheer Hugo Loudon [6227]. In 1920 he painted their son John Hugo [6246] and Ambassador John Loudon [6241], her brother-in-law, which is most probably when this study was made at the end of May at the Loudon family home, Voorlinden. The painting was somewhat larger originally, and signed, but cut down to the present size by a previous owner.
