CHANGE SOME LINES OR ADD SOME OF YOUR OWN THOUGHTS TO AVOID YOUR MP’S SPAM FILTER
Dear (insert member of Parliament)
I am writing to you today in response to the announcement made on the 22nd of April 2020 by our Equalities minister Liz Truss. This announcement has been received as a threat on transgender rights and I demand that these changes do not take place.
Transgender people live their lives on high alert everytime they leave their home, and making their lives harder with limited access to medication/resources for minors, bathroom bans and threats to their civil rights will not be accepted. It validates the arguments made by transphobes, who often get violent, must I remind you that trans people are disproportionately likely to experience a hate crime. Stonewall’s Trans Report (2018) reports that 41% of trans people had experienced a hate crime in the previous year. Liz Truss’ changes validate the perpetrators.
First, trans lives were put up for debate by the GRA consultation, their right to exist, discussed by the British public. But even so, 70% of the respondents wanted to see positive change for trans people. Rolling back these changes sends out a clear message, democratic instruments can and will be ignored on a whim.
Recently, rights of transgender people in the US and Hungary have been revoked, I implore you to ensure that the United Kingdom does not follow suit.
I urge you, as my local MP to address the threat made by Liz Truss, fight for equality for trans people, and stop the changes taking place. These changes would be a monumental loss for the UK’s human rights record.
Please, advocate for your trans constituents.
I look forward to your response.
Regards,
