Dear Parents/Guardians,

During the dismissal of the Middle School today, there was an outdoor fight between one of our students and an intruder (illegally present 17 year old male). The fight was immediately addressed by our Campus Response and Safety Team (CRST) during which time the illegal male fell to the ground. At that point our CRST team members saw a gun in his waistband.  The school was immediately placed in a lockdown and students that had exited the building were returned to the building in a safe and orderly manner. Meanwhile, the intruder fled the campus.

The CRST team, administration and staff were effective in following our emergency protocols that we have designed in working with Critical Incident Management and Muskegon Police. Our students conducted themselves at the highest level in responding and following the directions of our staff. As a result of all their actions no injuries occurred, no discharge of the weapon, and the intruder never entered into our facility. Our District does not and will not tolerate this type of behavior. The safety of all our students and staff is the top priority for everyone and our professional training has shown to provide immediate and effective reaction to reach that end.

 We are currently working with Muskegon Police and have already identified multiple people involved. The Middle School has been cleared for evening events and practices.
