Lecture goals

The goal of this lecture is to give the students the basics on printed circuit boards (workflow, terminology, rules, thermal and mechanical constraints, device footprints, etc).

Detailed outline

- Design flow for printed circuit board (PCB).

- Packages and footprints of active and passive devices.

- Technology of passive devices.

- Design rules, placement and routing.

- Integrity of signals.

- Thermal constraints.

- Technologies for the realization of PCBs.

Applications

Practical : Tutorial on an industrial CAD tool (Altium Designer)

Project (evaluated) : Desing of a PCB for a student project or personal project.

Acquired skills

- Understanding all the issues related to the design of PCBs.

- Choosing the most appropriate technologies for passive devices.

- Setting of design rules taking thermal constraints into account.

- Using a industrial CAD tools for the design of PCB.
