For public release:
We, the students representing partnering HBCU organizations, future HBCU students, and external partner organizations in collaboration with Action Activists are calling for all HBCU administration, elected state, and government officials, to come together and re-evaluate the current policies and regulations that govern our HBCUs, rewrite them, and restore true HBCU culture by making them a safe space for black students. We demand that:
- We demand that the recent affirmative action ruling be revisited and ultimately overturned by the Supreme Court and that our HBCUs support us in calling out SCOTUS.
- We demand that all students have access to better mental health resources, more mental health days, and call for the erasure of the stigma around mental health on black campuses.
- We demand that all HBCU School of Businesses alter their curriculum to one that teaches black students to excel in business by being themselves in white spaces and not changing to conform to societal standards.
- We demand that HBCUs revisit their policies surrounding the first amendment on their campuses and work with their student body to create new free speech/expression/assembly policies that foster a safer and more progressive campus environment.
- We demand that hbcus revisit their contracts with partnering ROTC programs and that they refine their recruitment strategies to one which does not emphasize a career path within the military as one of the only ways to pay for college.
- We demand for HBCUs to harness students’ investment knowledge and internal talent effectively when allocating funds. Additionally, it is crucial for them to establish a consistent mechanism for actively hearing and responding to students' calls for change and resolution in regard to fund allocation. We also call upon the Biden administration to review and amend their HBCU Initiative Plan, ensuring that it facilitates lasting financial prosperity and advantages for HBCUs, while eliminating systemic funding disparities rooted in race.
- We demand that HBCU, Department of Education, and government administration & policy makers rewrite the Title IX policies and replace them with new policies that set restrictions against the inherent bias already within them. We also demand that HBCUs leverage young black talent to create a better reporting software for students to utilize that makes them more encouraged to come forward; as well as a better system in place to ensure that due process is given to every student. Lastly, we demand that HBCUs offer more resources to sexual assault survivors.
- We call upon our political representatives and leaders to take immediate and meaningful action to ensure equitable resources on HBCU campuses. Specifically, we demand:
- Off-campus housing accessibility and affordability: Implement comprehensive initiatives to make off-campus housing more accessible and affordable for HBCU students. This includes assisting students in understanding credit and debt management through payment plans and educational programs. Advocate for leases that consider the unique lifestyle and semester schedules of students, fostering a conducive environment for their academic success.
- On-campus housing improvements: Allocate resources to enhance the living conditions in on-campus housing facilities. This involves providing an ample quantity of housing units to cater to all accepted students. We insist on safe, comfortable, and well-maintained living spaces that promote a conducive learning and living environment.
- We demand HBCUs call out the respective officials responsible for the placement of environmental hazards and advocate for their students by fighting for their removal. We also demand that HBCUs leverage black talent in STEM at the undergraduate level and listen to their ideas on how to address these issues with sustainable solutions.
- Ongoing tensions between BIPOC and police show the need for sustained change. To fulfill their duty as public servants, police must prioritize cultural competence and respectful engagement with the community. That is why we are calling for reformation in the following areas:
- Campus police training to one that prioritizes cultural awareness & genuine student-staff relationships and addresses the widespread bias in U.S. policing disproportionately impacting people of color
- Put an end to the over-utilization of unnecessary excessive police force on campus
- Foster regular conversations with students about their concerns regarding police presence and acts on AND off-campus to ensure you are maintaining good student-staff relationships with your campus police
- We passionately call upon all HBCUs to take a bold step towards true representation and equity in education. We demand that every HBCU institute a policy requiring that all Black-focused classes be taught by Black teachers. Additionally, we firmly advocate for every HBCU to strive for a minimum of 50% Black faculty across its academic staff.
- We call for immediate action to address the growing division amongst HBCU campuses. Our HBCUs have been pillars of education and empowerment, and we cannot allow this division to persist. We call for the convening of a summit, uniting leaders, educators, alumni, and stakeholders from all HBCUs and government administration to:
- Identify the root causes of division.
- Foster a sense of unity and shared purpose.
- Develop strategies to address funding disparities, resource allocation, and educational opportunities, and other issues we have addressed in this campaign.
- Promote cooperation and collaboration as well as create longevity in our resolutions to these issues.
- Organize a way to regularly monitor and address these issues.
