In Anaconda we use the OWL curriculum for our preschool. I created my lesson to fit in with the curriculum during the Morning Meeting activities during the 1st week of school.
The 1st day of school during Morning Meeting, I would share with my students my name, a google image of my house (hopefully in street view or 3D view if available), and then I would show students the route from my house to school using Google Earth. I would also have the discussion of how I get to school, by car, by bus, by walking, etc.
During small groups later on in the day, I would then, with each child take screenshots of their house and their route to school using Google Earth, print them, have the child cut them out and then paste them on a piece of construction paper. Also have the student either write or trace his or her name on the construction paper depending on their level. This may take a couple of days, example: find and print Google images one day and on the next day do the cutting and pasting.
Sharing Presentations:
Students when completed will present their Google pictures and their names to the rest of the class during Morning Meetings the rest of the week. Students can even display their work on the art wall, if you have one. (Example project on page 2)
Learning Outcomes:
Students will be learning how they are unique through their names, where they live and how they get to school.
Requirements:
Best if assignment is done in small groups (2-3 students)
Use SmartBoard for your presentation if possible
Use Google Earth
Use color printer for images if possible
Supplies- construction paper, scissors, stick glue and markers
Extension Ideas:
Print out their house using Google Earth and include the student’s address. You can use this throughout the year to practice memorizing their addresses.
Have students actually draw a map of how to get from their house to school. I love seeing preschool artwork.
