- Let’s add a question your students can draw on top of!
- Adding a background image is optional
- NOTE: Students can also upload images as part of their response!
*Note: Students can type on “show your work” canvases, except on tablet devices. We are adding this feature to tablets really soon and in the meantime, you can create a “short answer” question directly below the canvas that they can type on!
Add Content
- Click ADD CONTENT and choose a content type!
- Note: Students can not respond to content, use questions when you want students to collect responses!
Image
- Upload or Drag in any image that works for your formative assignment.
Text Block
Whiteboard
- The whiteboard is for a teacher to model a concept for their students
- Sketch a concept for your students.
- Upload, resize, and annotate an image for your students to reference.
Video (YouTube)
- Search for a Youtube video or paste in a Youtube URL!
Upload & Transform a Document
- Upload pre-existing documents (ex: PDFs,Word Doc, images). If the file is too large, you can upload the first part and then upload the next part.
- Then, add questions/content on top of the document(s)

- You can click on Preview to see what the assignment will look like to students and create sample responses that will show up on the Live Results page
Auto-save and Reorder
Auto-Saving = Live Updates to Students
- Everything that you do is always auto-saving.
- You can tell when a question you create or a student response is auto-saved because the multi-colored circle in the top left will stop spinning.
Reorder
- Reorder questions and content using the up and down arrows.
Assign to Everyone
(if your students haven’t created accounts just yet)
- Select an assignment in your dashboard or use the button
- To open for public responses, enable the assignment for “Everyone”
- The assignment is now publicly available -- no login will be required
- You can give out the link or quick code so students can take the assignment
Link Quick Code
- If you give students the link, they can enter it in their URL bar
- If you give students the quick code, they can type it in the top corner of goformative.com
- If your students don’t see “Continue without Logging In” after entering the quick code or link, make certain the assignment is assigned to Everyone and not Only Classes (which requires logging in).
Create Classes
(if you want your students to be able to get their scores back)
Why we recommend having students login and join Formative classes:
- Students can receive feedback AND see their scores once returned.
- Student work will be saved even if they lose internet connection.
- Students do not require a new code or link for every assignment.
- Students will add to their portfolio of work with each visit.
- Student responses can be filtered by class.
- Teachers can lock/unlock an assignment by class.
To create a class, on your dashboard, choose the “Classes” tab.
Once you have a class, there are five ways to enroll your students
1. My school uses Google Apps For Education
- Display your Class Code.
- Send students to goformative.com/#signup.
- Have students "Sign up with Google" and enter your Class Code.
2. My school uses Clever
- Ask your administrator for the school portal link and access to Formative. Students will log in via Clever and enter your Class Code.
3. I want to import my students directly into my class
- Complete this spreadsheet and email it to hello@goformative.com (allow up to 24 hours).
- Remember to include the Class Code for the import.
4. I'd like to have my students join my class themselves
5. I’d like to mass enroll students for multiple teachers
- For multiple teachers, please email us about setting up accounts centrally via hello@goformative.com or call 513-673-8278.
Students gain access to any assignments assigned to the class that they join.
Watch an example of creating a class and having a student join it
- If a student needs to switch classes, delete them from your class list. Then, they can enter the class code for the class they are switching into.
- Deleting a student from a class will only un-enroll them from that class.
- Student assignments, responses, scores, and feedback remain intact!
Assign to Only Classes
(easily control access and return scores to Formative classes)
- Whether your students in your Formative class access the assignment from their dashboard or using a shortcut, they will be able to re-access it directly from their dashboard. They will also be able to see their scores and feedback if you permit.
- Select an assignment in your dashboard or use the button
- Make sure that the assignment is enabled for Only Classes
- By clicking on “Only Classes”, the assignment can now only be accessed by the designated classes that are switched “ON”.
- You can change if the assignment is open and shows scores for each class.
NOTE: Have students refresh their page when you make Assign Panel changes.
Assign State: Open
- If you select “Open”, students in that class can respond to the assignment, but can’t see their scores just yet.
Student’s perspective while assignment is “Open”
Student can work at his/her own pace without seeing scores
Assign State: Closed with Scoring
- If you select “Closed with Scoring”, students in that class can’t respond to the assignment, but can see their scores.
Student’s Perspective while assignment is “Closed with Scoring”
Students can’t change their responses but can see questions, and scores.
Assign State: Instant Scoring
- If you select “Instant Scoring”, students in that class can respond and see their scores appear simultaneously.
Student’s Perspective while assignment is “Instant Scoring”
Students can respond (and change answers) with immediate scoring updates.
Note: Current bug requires student to refresh page to see total score.
View and Act on Student Responses
(Live Results)
- Click on the “Live Results” icon for any assignment in your dashboard
- You can also access Live Results by clicking on the link at the top of the assignment if you are in the Build or Preview views.
- The Live Results page allows you to view student responses and act on them!
Zoom, Sort and Filter by Class
Zoom
- You can zoom in to see a student response in more detail by clicking on a student response and then clicking on “Zoom”
Sort by Name, Score, Recency
- Sort student responses using the drop down menu to the left of the score bar by: Most recent, highest score, lowest score, first name, last name.
Filter Responses by Class
- You can filter responses by classes you have created by clicking on the drop down menu in the top right of the Live Results screen
Give Feedback and Grade
Give Written Feedback
- To give immediate written feedback, click on an individual student response, type it in, and click the send button!
Grade a Response Manually
- To grade a student response, first click on the student response and use the pop-up.
Live Results Views
- In the top left corner of the Live Results is a drop down menu where you can switch between the 2 different views for looking at student responses/data:
Single Question View
- In the Single Question View, you see responses for one question at a time.
- To change between questions, click on the question number or the arrows to the left and right of the question text.
Summary View
- The Summary View gives a high-level visualization of how students are doing.
- You can also return to a specific question or piece of content in the Single Question View by clicking on the question number or content above the responses
Hide Names/Scores
- To hide student names or scores, use the blue toggles next to the score bar.
- Hiding names and/or scores is useful if you would like to project student work.
- Now you can have a conversation with your students without showing names and/or who has received what scores.
- Make it a game and have the class work together to turn the summary bar green!
Export Results
- When the assignment is complete and all questions are graded, you can export the results. Look in the upper right of the assignment page for a blue box with white text. (Data, Data, Data)
- Results are in a spreadsheet format (csv) so that you can import them into most gradebooks and other systems. Fantastic for documentation! We plan on adding the class names to the spreadsheet as well so you can more easily share results for each class!
Manage Assignments
Share with Another Teacher
- Click “Share with teachers” after selecting an assignment or a folder and give the Quick Code or Direct Link to a colleague
- After logging in, the code or link will create a copy of your assignment.
- Teachers you share an assignment with can edit their version but it will not affect your version.
- They do not see your students’ responses.
Delete/Clone/Organize in Folders
- Delete a selected assignment with the “red trash can” icon to the left.
- Clone a selected assignment with the “blue clone icon” to the left. The clone will not have any pre-existing student responses.
- On your dashboard, you can create folders for your assignments.
- Drag assignments into folders and sub-folders for organization.
