- Born in Scotland in a poor family, immigrated to US at 12

- Entered oil business in 1863 with an oil refinery. This grew significantly and became Standard Oil

- Designed and built railroad cars. Sleeper car made long distance travel possible

- Rapid advancement in jobs. Invested in iron, oil, railroad, and telegraph industries. Founded his own company, rose to the top of the steel industry

- By 1879, Standard Oil refined 90% of all US oil giving him a monopoly

- 1881 Pullman built an entire town south of Chicago strictly for his employees.

- Used vertical integration to keep costs low and profits high

- Used horizontal integration to keep costs low and profits high

- He owned everything in the town: the church, the shops, the library, the houses

- 1901, sold his company for $480 million

- Created the first trust

- No local newspapers and no local government in these towns

- Philanthropist. Gave a lot of $$ to support education, libraries, scientific work, and started Carnegie Mellon University in PA and built Carnegie Hall

- Made special deals with railroad and shipping companies to get lowest possible prices

- If you spoke out against the company or him you could find yourself not only without a job but without a home or any money

- Wrote The Gospel of Wealth where he talks about the duty of the wealthy to the rest of society

- Gave away over half of his money to charities. University of CHicago, Rockefeller Foundation, and other education causes.
