Adapted from the 08Design wikisite:

Purpose:
- To create a successful digital painting, inspired by a photograph, using and understanding a variety of Photoshop tools.
- The following highlights the process:
- Choose an interesting, yet simple, color photograph to use to create a “painting”, using a variety of Photoshop tools.
- Be sure the layers palette is visible; go under window, choose layers.Use different layers, by clicking the new layer icon, for different subject matter; do not use the same layer for the entire painting.
- Use real color by using the eyedropper tool and selecting the color wanted,; be sure to include enough different values (lightness/darkness) of the color to show depth and volume.
- Include enough detail so that the subject matter is recognizable.Use the stylus to create lines of varying thicknesses and pressure to create line variety.
- Use the layer visibility tool to turn off and on the background layer to check your work.
- Use the opacity scale to change the transparency of your painting, in order to see the original.
- Use different size and different texture brushes for the appropriate purpose. Change their directions under the brush palette.
- Use the eraser tool to erase unwanted marks.
- Use the clone stamp tool to repeat an area of the painting.
- Drag unwanted layers to the trash can in the layers. Below is a great link with lots of examples of digital paintings. .http://psd.tutsplus.com/articles/inspiration/mind-blowing-digital-paintings/
