[Translation of a typed letter from Baron Iván Rubido-Zichy]

LONDON.

25th April 193[0].

The Budai Dalárda choir^[1] will be giving a concert in London on the 7th of May this year, in the Queen’s Hall.

In order to promote the success of the venture, it is important that Hungarians living in London should lend it their moral support. I would like to discuss potential strategies to promote this with leading members of the Hungarian community here.

To this end, I respectfully ask you to come to a meeting, which will be held on the 28th April at 4pm in my office (35 Eaton Place).

Sunday, April 27 [1930]

Dear Baron Zichy,

Thank you for your [illegible] letter which I was flattered to receive. In the meantime it has probably come to your knowledge that the mayor of Budapest^[2] has written to me asking me to show my support for the Hungarian Dalárda [men’s choral society].^[3] In his letter he introduces me to Mr József Kis [sic] – who brought me the mayor’s lines letter.

Despite the sensitivity of my position here, I have decided to invite the whole choir to tea, on the 8th of May at 5 o’clock in the afternoon – in the hope that the weather will be fine enough for us to be in the garden, appropriate surroundings for them to sing one or two songs.^[4] 

We will take advantage of this opportunity to invite such British guests as are interested in Hungarian art and culture and we hope that we will be able to count you – in the company of your gracious wife – among those present here for tea. Since the invitations are to be sent out tomorrow, Monday, we would be very glad if you would care to send us the addresses of a few people whom you think it might be appropriate for us to invite.

I am sorry not to be able to be present at the soirée in the Queen’s Hall but as president of the R.B.A. I have to attend an important soirée banquet. But my family will all be there. [Illegible deletion] because of this banquet – and the men’s choir, I am staying here – and will go to Paris for a few weeks on the 9th of May instead of on the 1st – since yesterday and today I had to be here to finish an important portrait, I will set off for the country this after after tea, to join my dear family – and will return on Tuesday afternoon. This means, therefore, that I will not be am unable to be present at your meeting. If you still wish to see me, I am always at your disposal.

Kedves Baro Zichy,

Köszönettel vettem hozzám intézett [illegible] engem megtisztelő soraidat. Valószínűleg közben tudomásodra jutott hogy Budapest fővárosnak polgármester egy levélben felkért hogy érdeklődjék a magyar Dalárda iránt. Ezen levelében bemutatta Kis József urat– a ki sorait a polgármester levelét át elhozta hozzám –

Bárminő kényes is itteni helyzetem, elhatároztam hogy az egész Dalárdát május hó 8 ikára délután 5 órakor ide meghívjuk Teára – remélve hogy az időjárás kedvező lesz kertünkben mely alkalmas arra egy két dallat énekelni fognak.

Ezen kellemes alkalmat felhasználva, meghívunk oly angol személyiségeket akik a magyar szellem s művészete iránt érdeklődnek, s reméljük hogy a magad – valamint a kegyelmes asszonynak kíséretében – a közönség tagjait lesz szerencsénk itt is lesz szerencsénk itt teára üdvözölhetni – miután holnap Hétfőn a meghívók szét lesznek küldve nagyon örvendenénk lennénk ha úgy kivánod – és elküldenél néhány czímét oly személyiségről akiket azt hiszed hogy ezen alkalomra meghívjunk.

[Illegible] ezen Banquet – és a Dalárda miadt [sic] maradok itt – s május 1 eje helyett 9-ikén kell Parisba mennem nehány hétre – miután tegnap s ma itt kellett lennem, egy fontos arczképet befejezni ma dele tea után megyek falura k. Családomhoz – s kedden délelőtt térek vissza. A megbeszélés tehát ha Hétfőn nem leszek jelen az összejövetelen nálad nem lehetek jelen – Ha egyebkent ohajtasz velem találkozni mindenkor állok rendelkezésedre.
