Year 7 Folk music prep: The Folk Tradition
Make a project for either a music website or a music magazine explaining
what folk music is. You could call it ‘Folk music – old and new’ or make
your own title. Use the questions below to help you – make sure you write in
your own words! You can write this on Google doc/ slides or do it on paper
Part 1 : What is folk music?
• What is folk music? How has folk music changed over time?
• What’s your reaction to folk music?
• What folk songs do you like and why?
• What are some typical folk instruments you know about? What is your favourite and why?
• What sort of scales do folk musicians use and how do
they sound?
Part2: Folk music I have listened to
(a) Listen to some folk music and then describe it. What instruments are playing? What is the feeling of the
music? What scale do you think is used? How does the music change? Use the elements
of music and other music words as much as you can
