- Then, tape four cards from Teaching Tools 9-C ( 2 tomatoes, plus sign, 4 tomatoes) to show an addition expression.
- The teacher will say the the addition expression aloud.
- Point out that 6 is the sum.
- The teacher will say an addition sentence.
- Have a child write the addition sentence and solve it.
- Have answer the following questions: Where do we put an equal sign? What does the number after the equal sign show us? Can you tell the the addition sentence?
- Explain that the sum tells how many in all comes after the equal sign.
- Repeat the activity with different children and different cards, having the class name the sum each time.
- Distribute a sentence strips to each child.
- Help the children make an addition sentence.
- Have the child complete the addition sentence and read the addition sentence.
