Frequently Asked Questions

How does the black screen actually work? NoLight stays open and in the foreground the whole time you're recording. It sets your screen brightness to 0 and shows a plain black screen — the display itself never turns off, and the app never leaves the foreground. Double-tap anywhere on the black screen to see it again without stopping the recording, or press either volume button.

Where are my recordings and photos saved? Everything is saved locally, inside the app itself — not automatically to your Photos library. Open the Gallery tab to see everything you've recorded. From there you can save a copy to Photos, or share/export a file whenever you want.

Does NoLight record in the background, or while my phone is locked? No — this isn't possible on iOS for any third-party app, and NoLight doesn't attempt to work around it. Recording only happens while the app is open in the foreground.

Can the recording indicator be turned off? No. Whenever NoLight is recording, an on-screen indicator is always visible, on every tab. There's no setting or gesture that hides it — that's intentional, not a bug.

What is Vault? Vault is an optional, separate space inside NoLight — protected by Face ID or a PIN — for recordings, photos, notes, and browsing you want to keep apart from the rest of the app. It's similar to Photos' "Hidden" album or a Face ID–locked Notes folder: it protects your own content from someone else picking up your unlocked phone. Turning Vault on doesn't change how recording indication works.

I stopped a recording from another tab (Workspace, Gallery, Settings) — did it actually save? Yes. Recording continues no matter which tab you're on, and tapping the floating recording indicator's Stop button finalizes the file exactly the same way stopping from the Camera tab does. Check the Gallery tab to confirm.

Camera or microphone permission problems If you denied camera/microphone access when first asked, iOS won't ask again — go to iPhone Settings → NoLight to turn them back on. NoLight also links directly to this screen from inside the app when it detects permission is off.

A recording looks shorter than expected, or won't play This is rare, but if it happens please email the details above (roughly how long you recorded, what interrupted it if anything — a phone call, low battery, force-quitting the app) so we can look into it.
