Game Production Roles

The ideal # of people in each role is listed in parentheses assuming a 30 person team.

ART

2D Artist (4-5)

2D artists are responsible for generating any 2D visual assets a project might need. They leverage their experience in illustration, painting, and/or graphic design to generate concept art, texture maps, and/or user interface (UI) mockups and final elements.

3D Artist (2-3)

3D artists are responsible for creating any 3D assets that are used in a project. 3D artists should be experienced in one or more of the areas of modeling, rigging, shading, lighting, FX, and scene layout.

Character Animator (2-3)

Character animators are responsible for imbuing a project’s characters with the illusion of life through movement. 3D character animators should be able to produce emotive, emotional performances from their virtual characters.

Technical Artist (1-2)

Technical artists have a wide variety of responsibilities requiring them to draw upon both their art and engineering experience. They help facilitate the handoff of assets between art and other production departments, and they might be asked to complete short independent research assignments such as determining the best way to achieve a particular visual goal given the limitations of the production toolset.

AUDIO

Audio Designer (1-2)

Audio designers are responsible for creating the soundscape for a project, including but not limited to music, ambience, and sound FX.

GAME DESIGN

Game Designer (2-3)

Through playtesting, experience, intuition, and market research, game designers decide how the game should work, and then communicate that clearly to the rest of the team, typically through written documents, visual mock ups, and conversations. Key skills include communication, listening, playtesting, and precise writing.

QA Lead (1)

Everyone on the team will likely be involved in QA (Quality Assurance) at some point during the project, but we need someone to lead that effort. The QA Lead works closely with the game designers and programmers (and any other team) to ensure the game is working as intended. Key skills include communication, attention to detail, and ability to help other people work more effectively.

PROGRAMMING

Gameplay Programmer (4-6)

Gameplay programmers create the game based on the game design. They must work closely with the artists to integrate the art into the game. Familiarity with Unity and C# is valuable.

UI Programmer (1-2)

UI Programmers work closely with the 2D Artists to implement the UI (User Interface) in the game. Of course, these programmers will also have to work with all the other programmers to integrate their work smoothly with the rest of the game development. Every button or menu in the game will be handled by UI Programmers. Familiarity with Unity and C# is valuable.

Tools Programmer (1-2)

With a team this large, it will be very valuable to have some programming experts who can research and implement tools specific to our needs. Unity is a powerful engine, but it might not do everything we want. A tools engineer will research a problem and find ways to fix it or work around it, supporting the rest of the team and making their work more efficient. Familiarity with Unity and C# is valuable.

Build / GitHub Guru (1)

Everyone on the team (and especially all programmers) will be responsible for maintaining a stable build and a well-organized GitHub repository, but we need one person to lead that effort. The Build / GitHub Guru will ensure that the build and source control processes run smoothly. This role is extremely valuable for any team of sufficient size. Familiarity with Unity, C# and GitHub (or other source control systems) is valuable.

PRODUCTION

Producer (3-4)

Producers (aka Project Managers) ensure that everyone on the team has what they need to do their jobs well. They also help track progress and attempt to predict how and when the game will be finished (ideally on time!) Producers do any task necessary to help others do their jobs.

BONUS

Web Designer (0-1)

An optional role for this class, but extremely valuable if we want to get good PR. We need someone with web design skills to put together a strong website once the game is near completion. This site will be useful to any news agency reporting on our game, and for all of our portfolios. This role could be combined with another role above, since it's not a full time role.

Video Editor (0-1)

An optional role for this class, but extremely valuable if we want to get good PR. We need someone with video editing and composition skills to put together a strong trailer video once the game is near completion. This video will be useful to any news agency reporting on our game, and for all of our portfolios. This role could be combined with another role above, since it's not a full time role.

Marketing / PR (0-1)

An optional role for this class, but extremely valuable if we want to get good PR. We need someone who will contact Apple, lead the submission efforts, write copy for the app, get in touch with news sites, and generally publicize the game. This role could possibly be combined with another role above, since it could be a part time role or full time role.
