NZZ - Migration of Expats
GEN Editors' Lab at Russmedia Digital 2013-03-22
How did we START?
We have shared inputs on GoogleDocs. Our result will be used for a future editors story.
We have prepared a main topic for GEN theme "International Migration": Expats
An expatriate (commonly abbreviated expat) is a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country and culture other than that of the person's upbringing. The word comes from the Latin terms ex ("out of") and patria ("country, fatherland"). Source: Wikipedia
What we INVESTIGATED?
We have collected one main data source from Open Government Data Stadt Zürich with info persons migrations which stayed no longer than 4 years between 1993 to 2011.
Data specification:
year, duration of stay, age, country of origin, country of leave, city section, profession

How to VISUALIZE?

First IMPRESSIONS?!
FINAL countdown!
What PROBLEMS we faced?
We are software engineers and not data journalists. How to model data for visualization? How to tell a story? But we know how to define and run a project! How easy for editors should it be to create charts?
How could this lead to a PROJECT?
NZZ editors from different departements are working on one story. Our data visualization will be used. We need to build an easy-to-use "interface".
