  • Plant seeds. 

What are parts of the plant?  

  1. Have the children imagine that they had a garden, and tell what they would do to help the plant grow in their garden.
  2. Use Flip Chart page 18 to review vocabulary terms before.
  3. Guide vocabulary development by asking the following questions: Which pictures shows a seed? Where would you put the seed so it will grow? (In soil) What does the seed turns into once it begins to grow? (Seedling) Why do you think this plant is called a seedling? How doe the plant changes when is fully grown? In addition to leaves, what else appears on the vine? If you cut open If you cut open this ripe pumpkin, what do you think you would find inside? (Seeds)
  4. Help the children understand that plants follow a cycle of development.
  5. Read “Jack and the Beanstalk.”
  6. Discuss story elements. 
  7. Distribute soil, small containers, and seeds.
  8. Help the children plant seeds.

  1. Provide children with various types of fruit.
  2. Ask: What do you think you will find inside the fruits?
  3. Remove the seeds, wash and dry them.
  4. Have the children examine the seeds using a hand lens.
  5. Divide the class into groups.
  6. Have the groups sort the seeds into different groups.
  7. Have each group sort the seeds by different categories.
  8. Display Flip Chart page 18.
  9. Have the children answer the following questions: Which pictures shows a seed? Where would you put the seed so it will grow? (In soil) What does the seed turns into once it begins to grow?
