SUPPORT CALIFORNIA

Broader community supports & education

PURPOSE

This space is for Big Feelings - including grief, anger, isolation, fear, confusion, overwhelm, helplessness, numbness, hurt, - and for remembrance, healing, care, community, and hope. We hold close the victims, their families, and their communities; we uplift with care the local organizers and organizations directly supporting those in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay. We simultaneously feel urgency to check in with one another, to reassure our loved ones that with time we will heal together, to build space for community, remembrance, and hope. From this deep care came our motivation for this Pittsburgh Rally for Solidarity.

VALUES

Join us in solidarity with organizers from marginalized communities as we continue their legacies and uplift their work. Violence against Asian/Asian Americans is not new. It is rooted in the same state-sanctioned, interconnected sources of harm that impact all of our communities, including racism, xenophobia, sexism, white supremacy, and cisheteropatriarchy. We create safety, wellness, and wholeness only by working alongside our sibling communities in solidarity towards a future where all are free with abundant resources to thrive.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We are on the unceded land and home of the Osage and Shawnee Nations. This event only exists because Asian/Americans benefit from and partake in centuries of displacement, violence, and genocide of Indigenous and Native people. Settler colonialism is ongoing, including against our siblings of Hawai’i and the Pacific Islands, who are too often aggregated, overshadowed, and undermined by Asian/American individuals  and movements. We recognize our fights for justice may not align with struggles for Indigenous sovereignty. We urge that you continue beyond this realization and reflection to actively support Native and Indigenous communities in their struggles for liberation.

GUIDELINES

  • Please come safely and peacefully. By attending you agree to adhere to all applicable laws.
  • Respect the physical space, the emotional space, and your own needs.
  • Masks required. Do NOT come if you feel unwell. Livestream available for those unable to attend in-person.
  • Expect media, photography, and journalists.
  • Expect police. Know your rights. We keep us safe.

MESSAGING & SIGNAGE GUIDANCE

We request thoughtful messaging that aligns with our values when discussing, creating signs, and writing letters for this event.

  • Rhetoric rooted in state violence (eg: “hate crimes” and “anti-Asian hate”) uphold structures of oppression that ultimately harm our communities and our sibling communities
  • Placing the onus on individuals (eg: mental health, firearm ownership) fails to address root causes of violence - structural, systemic, interconnected systems of oppression that permeate all levels of society
  • Co-opting language from sibling movements (eg: BLM) undermines their efforts, progress, and time
