Dearly respected Friend,

Please accept my grateful thanks for your exceedingly gracious letter of 11th July.^[1] Partly because of what it contained, and partly thanks to other sources of information, I made so bold as to publish the enclosed short snippet about you in our newspaper.^[2] I truly feel it an honour, whenever I am able to write about you and your art, for which reason I beg you to turn to me if ever you have any requests from the Press or anything else in Hungary.

I will make further inquiries about a Hungarian edition of the book about you published by The Studio,^[3] and also with regard to the idea you suggested of perhaps producing a less costly edition.^[4] Here, of course, we are fully into silly season; no one is

in town, which means that nothing sensible will be able to be done about this until the autumn. As I mentioned, I have cancelled my plans for a summer visit to England, being put off by the heat. Instead, I will set off in a few days for Switzerland, for the first time, as it happens, to St Moritz (Hotel du Lac) for about two weeks.

And now, a few lines about that matter with which I should by rights have begun this letter, the tragic occurrence which began by bringing you the joys of grandfatherhood, only to be followed by deep mourning. I can do no more than imagine what a cruel blow this must have been to you and your honoured wife,^[5] both such exemplary heads of your family. May God bring you comfort! Perhaps next time, the Heavens will be more merciful to the young couple.

My wife and I are eagerly looking forward to your projected gracious visit in September, the news of which we are keeping strictly to ourselves.
