Open Issues

All issues that have been indroduced with Marshmallow are tagged with an [M].

[API] No DTS passthrough via standard Android AudioTrack API

[Last verified: V3.885]

3rd party apps are not able to perform passthrough for DTS audio via the standard Android AudioTrack API as the MediaTek driver lacks support for ENCODING_DTS and the most recent ENCODING_IEC61937.

Apps that only support the ENCODING_IEC61937 API will not be able to bitstream any audio (neither Dolby AC3 nor DTS).

The native Video app works for DTS passthrough. But since it also worked with Android Lollipop, which lacks the respective APIs for DTS, it most likely uses the PCM hack or some private API.

I am also providing a DTS trailer [DOWNLOAD] in order to reproduce the issue.

Sony/MediaTek argue that implementing Android’s passthrough APIs is not mandatory. DTS has been a standard multi-channel audio format for almost two decades now. Not properly supporting those in a modern TV is a shame and an embarrassment.

Sony/MediaTek really have to focus on the standard Android APIs as 3rd party app support is the big strength of the platform! This however doesn’t play out when using private APIs, leaving standard APIs broken/unsupported!

[API] No HW decoding of VC-1 Advanced profile via MediaCodec

[Last verified: V3.885]

Decoding VC-1 Advanced via the public Android MediaCodec API is currently not supported and is therefore software decoded in Kodi via ffmpeg. The weak ARM cores of the MediaTek SoC obviously can’t handle the decoding of 1080p in real-time.

MediaTek drivers on Sony lack the respective codec:

OMX.MTK.VIDEO.DECODER.VC1        video/wvc1

The MediaTek MT5890/MT5891 SoC is perfectly capable of decoding VC-1 Advanced as the native Video app shows no problem playing it back. This app however seems to have access to some private API definitions (libstagefright).

Here is a list of over 700 Blu-ray titles (>15%) encoded in VC-1.

[API] [M] Display Mode API not implemented - Everything 60Hz

[Last verified: V3.885]

Check out Android API documentation.

Everything except Live TV can only run at 60Hz. Even the Recorded Title List plays PAL recordings only at 60Hz, resulting in micro-judder.

[Wi-Fi] Slow 802.11ac speeds

[Last verified: V3.885]

A WiFi Speed Test (app has been sideloaded on the TV), downloading data from a fast Synology NAS to the Sony TV, yields ~100-110mbps at perfect Wi-Fi conditions and a theoretical link speed of 866mbps (3m from AP in direct line-of-sight). Typical speeds at that distance would be over 400mbps though.

Playing back the jellyfish encodes at different bitrates via DLNA and NFS confirmed the above results.

As it turns out, the Wi-Fi controller only runs at USB 2.0 speeds.

USB 2.0 should still give us more than those ~100mbps. A Linksys WUSB6100M connected to a PC via USB 2.0 receives data at 230mbps on average.

[System] [HDMI-CEC] Mute button has to be pressed multiple times to unmute

[Last verified: V3.885]

I have a Teufel soundbar connected to the Sony TV via HDMI-ARC. The Teufel is controlled via HDMI-CEC. After muting audio, the mute button has to be pressed several times in order to unmute, depending on the audio format (passthrough vs. non-passthrough)

Here is what happens according to what is displayed on the Teufel soundbar at each button press when outputting PCM:

(1) AVR receives PCM stream again, mute is still ON though > no audio

(2) mute is OFF but PCM stream to the audio device is stopped again > no audio

(3) mute is OFF and PCM stream is received again > finally sound is coming out again

For Dolby passthrough audio, the mute button has to be pressed twice to unmute.

[System] No possibility to add keyboard layout files

[Last verified: V3.885]

The MINIX NEO A2 front side controls are not fully supported due to a lack of appropriate keyboard layout (KL) files:

Those can unfortunately not be added by the user which would make a ton of sense though.

[System] Missing apps after disabling Featured Apps shelf

[Last verified: V3.885]

After disabling the flawed Featured Apps shelf and a subsequent reboot, most apps appear in the Apps shelf. Some, like for example Maxdome, are missing though.

[System] [Standby] Frequent wake-ups from deep sleep

[Last verified: V3.885]

Find a detailed examination of the standby behavior here.

[System] [Standby] TV often silently reboots in standby

[Last verified: V3.885]

How do I know this? Because when coming back in the morning and turning on the TV, everything is often in the state from after a full boot, which means that Live TV is playing (which I hardly ever use) and the first opening of the Home menu takes some time. It is also easily possible to determine the time of the reboot via ‘uptime’ ADB shell command.

I assume that some driver crashes when the TV resumes from deep sleep which can happen several dozen times in one single(!!!!) night, see my examination of the standby behavior.

[System] [Standby] Music apps preventing deep sleep

[Last verified: V3.885]

When switching off the TV while playing music via TuneIn Radio or Spotify, deep sleep is effectively blocked with the TV constantly consuming 20W.

[System] [Standby] [Security] VPN causing system crash on resume

[Last verified: V3.885]

VpnService is the official Android API for connecting to a VPN server. It is used by VPN client apps on the Google Play Store (like OpenVPN).

If there is a change in the networking state of the system while being connected to a VPN server, a severe system crash happens. An app is never supposed to crash the system, only itself. This might be a severe security threat.

A change in the networking state can for example be provoked by turning off/on the TV. So VPN needs to be disconnected before turning off the TV or else there will be a crash when turning the TV on again.

I am attaching an adb log of such an incident. Connection to my home VPN server (OpenVPN on Synology NAS) has been established by using the OpenVPN for Android app. TV has then been switched off and on ⇒ crash.

[System] [Standby] [USB] [M] Storage often not accessible after deep sleep

[Last verified: V3.885]

An attached USB storage device that has been formatted as “internal” is often not accessible anymore after deep sleep. It still appears under Settings ⇒ Storage, but no size/usage is displayed and no data can be read or written anymore.

I suspect this to be a MediaTek (USB) driver issue and the result of the several dozen wake-ups in standby over the course of one single night. USB driver resume behavior might be borked.

[System] [Standby] [USB] [M] Removable storage sometimes remounted to /storage/x$VOLID

[Last verified: V3.865] [V3.885 under investigation]

Removable storage typically gets mounted to /storage/$VOLUME-ID (e.g. /storage/12C2A88AC2A8739F). It sometimes happens that storage gets remounted to /storage/x$VOLUME-ID after deep sleep though (e.g. /storage/x12C2A88AC2A8739F). Apps which store a shortcut to this path can’t access it anymore after the remount.

I suspect this to be a MediaTek (USB) driver issue and the result of the several dozen wake-ups in standby over the course of one single night. USB driver resume behavior might be borked.

[System] [USB] [M] Apps cannot be granted write permissions to storage

[Last verified: V3.885]

File managers usually ask for write permissions to removable storage. Writing however still fails after accepting.

Only apps can write to their respective folder under Android/data/$app/.

The problem seems to be that Android Marshmallow on Sony misses the “internal” file manager.

[System] [USB] [M] Reduced USB storage drive compability

[Last verified: V3.885]

According to several communities, quite some USB storage drives that used to work properly under Lollipop fail to properly be initialized under Marshmallow. One of my pen drives has been affected as well, only being detected as ‘SMI USB drive’ instead of its volume name. Accessing data was not possible.

Re-formating didn’t help (tried NTFS, FAT32, exFAT). Rewriting the partition table eventually fixed the issue. So probably it was broken in some way, even though it was still fully functional on other devices like computers for example. Mostly disks with MBR partition table seem to be affected.

[Video] [M] 2.40:1 Cinemascope video still vertically stretched

[Last verified: V3.885]

In Lollipop, Cinemascope content (e.g. with 2.40:1 aspect) got vertically stretched to the whole 16:9 (1.78:1) display size, effectively distorting video.

In Marshmallow, the Video player still tries to be smart and stretches 2.40:1 content to 2.35:1, so still distorting it.

I am providing a sample video with a 2.40:1 aspect (1920x800). [DOWNLOAD]

Pixels are square nowadays unless video metadata tells you otherwise. No reason trying to be smart. Just take it as is.

[Video] No MPEG-TS H.264 playback via Synology DLNA Server

[Last verified: V3.885]

Video player refuses to play recorded MPEG-TS files (*.ts) with H.264 video inside from my Synology NAS:

“Unsupported file format.”

It is most probably a MIME type incompatibility between DLNA server and client as those files play fine from an USB storage.

[SAMPLE]

[Video] Inferior deinterlacing quality when engaging MotionFlow

[Last verified: V3.885]

Interlaced content suffers quality-wise when engaging MotionFlow. It looks like an inferior algorithm is used for deinterlacing, sometimes switching to Weave for certain portions of the image which would actually require interpolation.

MotionFlow Parameters:

Motion Smoothness: Max

Film Mode: High

After engaging MotionFlow, the video pipeline for sure changes, probably instructing a different component to do the deinterlacing (from my understanding there is the SoC and the X1 processor) which is just inferior in that regard.

[DTV] [Channels] Auto Service Update forcing provider sorting (LCN based)

[Last verified: V3.885]

Auto Service Update constantly restores the network provider’s predefined channel sorting based on the LCN (logical channel number) inside the NIT, effectively discarding the user’s custom sorting.

Disabling Auto Service Update is no solution as it kills guide update in standby. The TV will also not catch up new channels automatically anymore.

[DTV] [Channels] No consecutive numbering of favorites

[Last verified: V3.885]

Favorite channels, even though being re-sorted, retain the channel numbers from within the full channel list, resulting in the favorites channel numbering not being consecutive and impossible to remember. Navigating favorites via numeric buttons therefore isn’t much fun.

[DTV] [TV Guide] No guide update in standby if Auto Service Update disabled

[Last verified: V3.885]

Disabling Auto Service Update results in the TV Guide (EPG) not being updated anymore in standby, even though Update Guide in standby is enabled. EPG only updates for channels (or actually frequencies/transponders) that I manually tune.

These two settings (Auto Service Update and Update Guide in standby) should be independent from each other. I want the guide to be updated, but not the channels as Auto Service Update makes channels reappear that have previously been deleted for a reason. The global search for example includes TV events from the full channel list and not just the favorites. So I don’t want deleted channels to reappear.

As soon as I enable Auto Service Update , the TV Guide is also updated in standby again. So several settings seem to somehow correlate which makes the whole system hardly predictable.

This issue might be DVB-C/DVB-T (Digital) only.

Note that this is not a problem everywhere. EPG is usually transmitted on a per transponder/frequency basis. So if you tune into a channel, you will receive EPG for this very channel and channels on the same frequency/transponder, but not for channels on other frequencies/transponders, hence the update in standby which does nothing but a scan over all frequencies/transponders. This is different in the U.K. for Freeview/Freesat, where you always receive EPG data for all channels. So if you just tune into one channel, you receive EPG data for the complete network. You are the lucky ones, as you have a complete guide even if the update in standby (EPG scan) does not work.

[DTV] [TV Guide] [M] Flaky ‘favorites mode’

[Last verified: V3.885]

Several events make the TV leave ‘favorites mode’, effectively re-activating the full channel list:

  • leaving and re-entering Live TV (using an app or switching the input source in the meantime)
  • switching the TV off
  • pressing the TV button
  • pressing numerical buttons to switch channels

[DTV] [TV Guide] [Gracenote] Many channels lack additional cast/crew info

[Last verified: V3.885]

The automatic assignment of Gracenote program information to the DVB network’s channels on the TV does not work very well. The matching algorithm fails in a lot of cases like for example:

Channel name in cable network: ORF1 HD

Channel name in Gracenote DB: ORF 1 HD

An extra space already results in the channel not receiving any additional information from Gracenote. Manual assignment is not possible.

Matching algorithm should have some redundancy (check Levenshtein).

[DTV] [Voice] Fails to understand most German channel names

[Last verified: V3.885]

Switching the channel via voice command basically works. The TV however fails to resolve many of the German channel names (system and speech languages are of course set to German), especially those with special characters inside (like Sat.1 or ORF SPORT+ HD), performing a search rather than switching to the desired channel.

[DTV] [Voice] Live TV is not muted when microphone is activated

[Last verified: V3.885]

… in order to improve voice recognition. Also consider Passthrough audio.

[DTV] [Search] TV event search not limitable to Favorites

[Last verified: V3.885]

TV event search always uses the full channel list instead of favorites only, returning TV events from channels you might not be able to watch (e.g. due to a lack of respective pay TV subscription).

[DTV] [Search] TV event search getting stuck in an infinite loop

[Last verified: V3.885]

As of firmware 3.533, TV event search often gets stuck, displaying COLLECTING ADDITIONAL RESULTS FROM 0 OF 1 APPS forever, pretty much depending on the search term. I assume that this happens if not enough (< 30 to fill the entire row) events are being found.

[DTV] [Search] [M] Channel names of found TV events not reported anymore

[Last verified: V3.885]

TV event search always uses the full channel list instead of favorites only, returning TV events from channels you might not be able to watch (e.g. due to a lack of respective pay TV subscription). With the Marshmallow release, the TV events returned by search don’t even show the name of the corresponding channel anymore, see above screenshot. So you are completely blind as to whether you are able to watch or record the events returned by search or not, rendering it completely useless.

[DTV] [Search] TV event search seemingly returning unrelated events

[Last verified: V3.885]

Search accuracy improved with firmware 3.533. Voice searching for ‘CSI Miami’ now also finds the events called ‘CSI: Miami’. Now search seems to return events that are unrelated to the search term though.

I for example searched for ‘Navy CIS’. Search would also return ‘Columbo’, ‘Unforgettable, ‘Castle’ and ‘Hawaii Five-0’. These are however among those I can actually understand as they are all crime series. So search probably returns what you might also be interested in. But why it would return ‘How I Met Your Mother’, ‘DENK mit KULTUR’, ‘Das Geheimnis der Mona Lisa’, ‘The Diary of a Teenage Girl’ and ‘George, der aus dem Dschungel kam’ remains a secret to me. I could not find anything that these events have in common with ‘Navy CIS’.

If this is not a bug, Sony could probably specify their search criteria.

[DTV] [M] Double info OSD when switching favorite channels

[Last verified: V3.885]

When switching favourite channels (e.g. Favorites 1 via the Discover menu), a double top info banner OSD is displayed.

[DTV] [PVR] Full twin-tuner potential not leverageable

[Last verified: V3.843]

The TV Guide forbids overlapping recordings to be scheduled even though the TV features true twin tuners.

Recording one channel while watching another works for FTA. If you record an FTA channel, it is not possible to watch a scrambled channel in parallel though. Looks like the CI has unnecessarily been assigned to the first channel or is hardwired to the first tuner.

The above is the bare minimum the TV has to be able to handle. I am not even asking for watch and record or parallel recording of 2 scrambled programs with one single CAM.

[DTV] [PVR] Wrong names for series recordings with pre-recording time set

[Last verified: V3.885]

If a pre-recording time has been configured, series recordings (like each Monday at the same time) get the names of the previous events in the EPG. So the recorder takes into account the pre-recording time in order to determine the event name which is wrong.

This severe issue has been present forever. How do you find your desired recording if the event names don’t match? Great usability…

[DTV] [PVR] HDD registration only possible on USB 3.0 port

[Last verified: V3.885]

As of Marshmallow, people might want to extend “internal” memory via a fast USB 3.0 flash pen drive or HDD. So they have to make a choice between that and a HDD for recording as…

… it is not possible to register a recording HDD on an USB 2.0 port which would be enough performance-wise.

… it is not possible to use “internal” storage for recording.

An external USB 3.0 hub cannot be used to connect a recording HDD plus some adoptable storage either.

[DTV] [PVR] Recorded Title List not switching to 50Hz

[Last verified: V3.885]

… for smooth playback of PAL recordings.

[Voice] Google Now often not instantly reachable

[Last verified: V3.885]

When pressing the voice button on the remote, Google is often not (instantly) reachable, resulting in no voice input being detected. Pressing the button again fixes the issue.

Hard to say who is to blame. Just one hint on my usage pattern. I often use voice control out of live TV. So it might very well be that it takes some time until we are “online” again.

[Amazon Video] Search text input not working with 3rd-party keyboards

[Last verified: V3.885]

Searching for media is a huge pain as the Amazon app is neither integrated with the global unified Android TV search, nor can you use any 3rd-party keyboard to input text in the search field. The only way to do so is by using the painful on-screen keyboard together with the remote’s D-pad.

More information can be found here.

[Amazon Video] App doesn’t remember Prime filter

[Last verified: V3.885]

This might be intentional as Amazon wants you to also find pay content in order for them to make some money. I only use the Prime stuff though and it is quite annoying that the content filter always reverts to ‘all’ upon restart.

[Amazon Video] Watch Next row missing after setting Prime filter

[Last verified: V3.885]

[Amazon Video] Overlaying menus makes video playback stumble

[Last verified: V3.885]

Video playback in Amazon Video suffers from severe stuttering when bringing up menus like playback controls (OK/Select button) or the Action menu. This is true for HD video, but even more so when playing 4K video.

[YouTube 2.0] 60p videos not playing smoothly

[Last verified: V2.01.04 / 2017-09-20]

Playback of high frame rate content (60p) stutters, already starting at HD resolutions and getting worse at QHD (1440p60) and UHD (2160p60), while they play buttery smooth in previous YouTube 1.3.11.

A perfect example for verifying this issue is the Cinematic 1440p60 Test with lots of panning and movement inside. The video was played at its full 1440p60 resolution in both players and with the same TV settings (e.g. Motionflow a.s.o.). 60p on a 60/120Hz panel should perfectly be playable without any judder.

It is probably worth mentioning that YouTube 2.0 consumes way more CPU time compared to the old 1.3 version. Here is a quick representative comparison while playing the above mentioned clip:

YouTube 1.3.11

[Chromecast] [YouTube] 60p videos not playing smoothly

[Last verified: V3.885]

The player of the Google Cast Receiver pretty much suffers from the same performance issues as the YouTube 2.0 player. High frame rate content at HD resolution already suffers from frequent stuttering. Just like with YouTube 2.0, also CPU usage is very high. Here is again a representative measurement using the Cinematic 1440p60 Test clip:

User 51%, System 32%, IOW 0%, IRQ 11%

[Chromecast] Bringing up Action menu breaks Chromecast connection

[Last verified: V3.885]

Adjusting picture settings is essential for Chromecast as video frame rate can be anything (24p/25p/30p and multiples), requiring Motionflow frame interpolation for consistently smooth video playback.

(Same happens when bringing up Discover menu.)

[iOS] [Android TV] Re-pairing required at every connection attempt

[Last verified: V3.885]

At every connection attempt of the Android TV iOS app with the TV, the Android TV Remote Service requires a re-pairing, asking to input the displayed PIN.

Clearing data and cache of the Android TV Remote Service didn’t fix it.

Same app on Android (Android TV Remote Control) seems to behave correctly in this regard.

[iOS] [Android TV] Virtual keyboard not working properly for WebViews

[Last verified: V3.885]

Virtual keyboard does not work correctly for apps that are using WebViews, like for example Netflix or YouTube 2.0. The very first input done via Android TV remote app on iOS is always captured twice.

“lie to me” for example becomes “llie to me”. The Backspace is also not working properly.

The Android pendant of this app (Android TV Remote Control) works properly.

[iOS] [Android TV] Crash when pressing the voice button
