Gear
Thanks to (@jasonred79, @CodeXCDM) for getting me started with many of these ideas. This is still a work in progress.
Gear refers to items that can be equipped to your characters. Each character supports up to three items, the first slot is unlocked at level 10, and the following two cost 20k and 40k credits. Each piece of gear has a 1 to 4 star rating (4 star gear cannot be acquired except through evolving 3 star gear); the more rare the gear, the higher the number of stars assigned to it and better the abilities. From the starting point the gear can be evolved, fused or shattered (more below).
Each piece of gear can only be equipped to one character at a time, however it can be switched between characters at will. This means that even if you have 2 copies of a piece of gear, it can still only be equipped to one character at a time and the only use for it is shattering.
On a personal note, you will notice that I refer to gear as, “gear” and not “gears” throughout this document. This is because when you read the help file in injustice, they refer to it as gear, as in equipment. So as a personal favor to me, please do the same whenever you discuss gear. Thank you. [I am sure you can find 1000 grammatical and spelling errors in this document, I am not claiming to be perfect, this has just become a pet peeve.]
Each piece of gear has two to three specific abilities. You can read about the ones we have cataloged in the Google doc above. In general they offer a buff to some aspect of your character and/or a detriment to the team, this works in both online and in game fights. The first ability is always active immediately, the second activates when you evolve the gear. Gear that begins as three stars has a character-specific ability that is active at level 0, but only when equipped to the mentioned character.
Harder abilities to understand include: disable enemies special, critical attack, reflect specials, power drain and health drain. Thanks to (@Jarrod Del Rosario) for the below.
The best two ways to acquire gear are from the random 25k gear booster packs and the season rewards from online play. The third way gear can be acquired is by fighting online, if you win a set of battles (1,3 or 5) gear can randomly drop, at very low rates. Random pack seems to have drop rates of about: 15% 3 star, 30% 2 star and 55% 1 star. Season rewards are issued at the end of each season, season length can be found at the top of the leaderboard page in the multiplayer menu.
Each piece of gear starts at a star rating of 1-3, and can fuse shard into it (upgrading it) 10 times. Once upgraded 10 times, they can be evolved, increasing the star rating and adding the second ability. It can be upgraded 10 additional times.
To understand how this works, you have to understand shards, they come in four colors: red, blue, green and purple. Shards are obtained by shattering gear. Purple shards only come when shattering 3 or 4 star gear. Shards are fused into gear to upgrade the gear.
To fuse/upgrade gear you need the required shards and coin, each fusion increases the ability of the gear and the cost of the next fusion. More information can be found in the google doc. Purple shards are only used for evolving two and three star items. A two star item requires one purple shard and 12 other shard while a three star requires 3 purple shards and 35 other shards for evolution.
If you have more than one copy of specific gear, it can still only be equipped to one character. So shattering is your only option. More can be found in the google doc, however in general; rarity 3 items are the only means of acquiring purple shards, shattering 1 star items grants 4 shards, 2 star grants 8 shards, and 3 star grants 17 shards (1 purple).
Looking at these images, the level is indicated by the squared number and the number of copies you have is indicated by the circled number. If the circled number is greater than one, shatter the gear, there is no use for multiple copies.
If you do try to shatter gear you only have one copy of then you will get this lovely message. I recommend canceling as you will lose any progress you have made in upgrade that piece of gear.
So this is a complicated question, however it can be broken down. Based on data collected so far we can say this is the cost in credits and shards for each of these steps. Evolve represents the cost to level the base gear from 0 to 10 plus the special evolve cost. Max represents the cost to level the evolved form from 0 to 10. The actual shards used vary based on the gear.
Stars | Evolve | Max | Total |
1 | 70,000C 45 Shards | 275,000C 88 Shards | 345,000C 133 Shards |
2 | 75,000C 92 Shards | 275,000C 180 Shards | 350,000C 272 Shards |
3 | 85,000C 299 Shards | 275,000C 587 Shards | 360,000C 886 Shards |
Based on the gear drop rate from 25,000 credits packs each shard costs about 3,500 credits. If we assuming all of your gear comes from packs we can find an approximate value for each shard. This allows us to estimate the cost to fully upgrade any piece of gear.
Stars | Evolve | Max | Total |
1 | 0.23 million credits | 0.58 million credits | 0.81 million credits |
2 | 0.40 million credits | 0.90 million credits | 1.30 million credits |
3 | 1.13 million credits | 2.33 million credits | 3.46 million credits |
To evolve a 3 star piece requires a whopping 1.15 million credits, enough to get almost three red son packs. And to max it out, 3.48 million, that is enough to EVII your red son team, with a couple of gold packs left over. Needless to say fully evolving gear should not be a top priority, with 27 of the 3 stars there is plenty of time to work on this task.
The good news is that these same numbers can be applied to determine the value of the gear rewards for multiplayer. Each 3 star item is worth about 59,500 coin, each 2 star about 28,000 and each 1 star worth 14,000, so the reward for top 2% is worth about 378,500 credits, not bad at all, this in the long term will be the best way to raise the majority of your funds for upgrading gear.
Note: A special thank you to @jasonred79 who helped me fill in about one third of my table. And another thank you to Injustice . Thank you to all my readers and contributors.
This depends on your play style, however it is typically a good idea to start with giving a character their three/four star gear. It is rare that having 3 abilities rather than just 2 is detrimental. It is important to note that gear abilities are stackable, in other words, if you have 3 items that add 50% damage to regular attacks, you will end up with 150% boost to regular attacks. (@James_Fries)
Past this, pairing up abilities is a good idea, for instance, if you give Deathstroke his specific gear as a four star, then you have a boost to critical attack damage, a chance of doing critical damage and a boost to regular attack damage. If you focus on adding gear that increases critical damage more, boosts regular attack damage more and maybe adds unblockable then his regular attacks become very powerful.
Another powerful strategy is once 3 star gear is evolved it can heal with the use of certain specials, group a few of these together and you can end up with a character that heals themselves 66% on special one or 75% on special 2. (@Curtis Mohan)
Again, this largely depends on your play style! The gains from upgrading are a bit low (They add either .5% or 1% regardless of the cost), but the gains from EVOLVING are sometimes very good, so I recommend you EVOLVE the ones that you use a lot. For instance, the ones that heal you when you use a given special! In order to evolve you need to upgrade 10 times, but past that the returns are much lower.
Do not count out the 1 or 2 star gear, some of it is very useful and the cost of upgrading is obtainable, a fully upgraded 1 star will only run you 800,000 credits, versus a three star at 3.5 million.
Other note of interest, gear that increasing blocking is more valuable than you probably think. It maxes out at stopping up to 90% of the damage caused by special attacks, and only requires 40% total blocking stats, 30% can be reached with 2 fully upgraded 1 star gear: ‘Combat Training’ and ‘Forcefield Device’.
I would not take gear past two or three upgrades following evolution unless you are already sitting with mostly EVII characters and want to spend the money on packs to get shards. The upgrades past this give very little benefit for the cost.

Here is a taste:
In general the matchmaking process matches you with teams that are similar in power to your own. It does not seem to care about gear use however, so if you are struggling with using your best teams, try a primarily silver or bronze team.
@Marley Bautista How I easily win multiplayer battles with a good team setup: Have one "Tank", one "Power Drainer", and one "Bruiser". Tank is the one who can withstand a lot damage and relatively do some damage, the Power Drainer is of course the one who drains power on the enemy team, and the Bruiser is the one who mainly does most of the damage. For example: Red Son Superman is my Tank for my team, New 52 Nightwing is my Power Drainer, and Regime Superman is my Bruiser. This isn't the best team but you guys know what I mean.
@Karuna Tantri This is the team I used on multiplayer. 1 Striker, 1 Healer, and 1 Spammer. Use Winged Avenger at first which deal twice normal damage, then change to Batgirl and spam till Shazam got full power. Then use super and I can do 4 special without power. Shazam healed my team until full health with Blue Lantern Ring. He also heal self with Martian Garb
Speed strategy- Regime Flash, New 52 Flash (or prime), Lex Luthor (prime). Since energy is only really gained by hitting, I use regime flash to make sure the opponent cannot hit me. When a new opponent tags in I switch to bronze flash if Lex does not have a special bar to take the special from the new character and then switch right back to regime. I will update this with what I consider the best gear later.
Changes with 2.0 (and 2.0.1 / 2.0.2 (no real changes noted))
I removed the old warning in favor of the new one below: New warning in 2.0.1, the saving progress to the server function is working now and not wiping peoples accounts. If you play on your ipad and iphone their server will link the two so you can keep things up to date. There was a rumor that this was going to fix things for people who lost their data, but it does not seem to have helped most people.
UPDATE: Apple seems to be refunding money to people who lost their progress. Contact them for further information. WBID has also been emailing people a response finally, that is at the end of the document, courtesy of Jet Yang.
The below is the official response from wb games concerning people who lost their data, however if this does not work, contact apple as they are giving refunds for people who spent real money on the game.
How to recover your lost save file (Email from WB Games) Courtesy of Jet Yang
Hi everyone, I just got this email from WB Games this morning. I would like to share with you all on how to get back your save file. The email was written like this:
The 2.0 update of Injustice has made some changes to help players who lose save data due to device failure. Save data now saves to your WBID. This means a few things.
iCloud saves made prior to updating to 2.0 will still work, and may still be downloaded from iCloud. After a WBID save has successfully been created, your iCloud save will no longer continue to be updated.
If you recently lost game save data and were using iCloud in the past, please try the steps below to first attempt to redownload your iCloud save:
If you do not see the Cloud icon after performing the steps above, or if you lost save data by signing into the wrong WBID, please try signing out of and back into your preferred WBID
