A Moment of BAN

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

- Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom, 1994

In the Beginning

The History of the Jews in Venezuela dates to the middle of the 17th century (1650s), groups of conversos (Spanish and Portuguese descendants of baptized Jews) lived in Tucacas, Caracas, and Maracaibo. In 1824 Sephardic Jews from the Dutch colony of Curaçao began to migrate to the Venezuelan city of Santa Ana de Coro. The Jewish community, become established in the middle of the 19th century (1850s). Fleeing Nazi Germany brought over more Jews, and by 1950 the community numbered 6,000 members. The biggest immigration occurred in the 1950s and 1960s, when a large influx of Jews from Morocco settled mostly in the capital Caracas and the Jewish population in Venezuela peaked at 45,000. When Chávez took office in 1999, Venezuela's Jewish community had an estimated 22,000 people. Tensions, growing anti-semitism, and a deteriorating economy, resulted in emigration of Venezuelan Jews many to Israel. Today the estimated number of Venezuelan shrinking Jewish community stands at about 5,000.

From the Rabbis and Beyond…

 Rav Ovadia Yosef z”l

ovadia.jpg

Daf Bite  –   טעם דף

One of the differences between dinei mamonot (monetary cases) and dinei nefashot(capital cases) that is taught in the Mishna (32a) is whether we will reopen a case when someone suggests that new evidence is available. In dinei mamonot we will always be willing to reopen a case; in dinei nefashot we will only do so if the original decision found that the defendant was guilty. If he had been found innocent we will not reconsider the case, even if new evidence is forthcoming.

The Gemara on today’s daf suggests that the source for both of these laws is based on a passage in Sefer Shemot (23:7) that says ve-naki ve-tzadik al taharog – “do not kill an innocent or a righteous person.” Thus, the reason we will reopen a capital case if the defendant had been found guilty is because of the command of the Torah – do not kill an innocent person. This obligates the court to do all that is in its power to ascertain whether someone is innocent. The reason we will not reopen a case where the defendant has been found not guilty is because the Torah also commands not to kill a righteous person, which is understood to mean that someone declared righteous cannot be killed.

Elul

As the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionally a time of introspection and stocktaking -- a time to review one's deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming "Days of Awe" of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.

As the month of Divine Mercy and Forgiveness (see "Today in Jewish History" for Elul 1) it is a most opportune time for teshuvah ("return" to G-d), prayer, charity, and increased Ahavat Yisrael (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. (chabad.org)

The Zodiac Sign of the Month is the "Maiden," because of the verse, (Yirmiyahu 31:20), "…Return, O Maiden of Israel, return to these cities of yours!" Because this month is set aside for return to G-d and Repentance. (ou.org)

Jewish History - of Seconds

On the last day of Av of the year 2448 from creation (1313 BCE), Moses carved, by G-d's command, two stone tablets -- each a cube measuring 6x6x6 tefachim (a tefach, "handbreadth", is approximately 3.2 inches) -- to replace the two divinely-made tablets, on which G-d had inscribed the Ten Commandments, which Moses had smashed 42 days earlier upon witnessing Israel's worship of the Golden Calf. (chabad.org)

A Story – of 500 years

As a child, Haim Casas would walk the streets of the Jewish Quarter in Cordoba, Spain, with his grandfather, talking about the city’s past. “He planted a seed in me,” Casas says.

After the expulsion, Jewish presence in Spain went underground to escape persecution from the Inquisition; Crypto-Jews would practice secretly, their traditions mixing with the Mediterranean ebb-and-flow throughout the centuries. Today the 30,000 Jews living in Spain are recent emigres, mostly from Moroccan background. The descendants of Crypto-Jews that remained, according to Casas, inhabit a no man’s land: unrecognized as Jews by the established communities and shunned by the Catholic church because of their hybrid background.

It is precisely this cultural mix that, for Casas, forms part of the richness of Sepharad. He started delving into the history of his hometown and uncovered his own family’s past. After consulting with other Sephardic Jews around the world, he realized his last name was common among Sephardic Jews. But he’s not only Jewish, he told me: He has Gypsy, Moorish and Catholic roots as well.

This June,  “Rabbi Haim Casas from Cordoba” as he signs his name was ordained as a rabbi, the first Cordobese to achieve this status in 500 years. (tabletmag.com)

May many more will follow.

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Parasha: Re’eh - D’varim (Deuteronomy): 11:26-16:17

Historical Context: Creation Time: 2487 (1437 BCE).

Bnei Israel's 40-year journey is close to an end as they encamped in the plains of Moab, across the Jordan from Jericho, on the first day of the 12th month of the 40th year.

Parashort: Moshe continues his summing address to Bnei Yisrael. In the name of G-d, Moshe tells to Bnei Yisrael, "I place before you today a blessing and a curse" - the blessing will come when they fulfill G-d's commandments, and the curse if they abandon them. Laws concerning the Land are given. A Temple should be established to G-d for the people to bring their sacrifices; It is permitted to slaughter animals elsewhere not as a sacrifice but to eat their meat; the blood, however, may not be eaten. A false prophet should be put to death; an idolatrous city must be destroyed. The identifying signs for kosher and no-kosher animals are repeated. A tenth of all produce is to be eaten in Jerusalem, or else exchanged for money with which food is purchased and eaten there. The Mitsva of charity obligates Bnei Israel to aid a needy fellow with a gift or loan. Every seventh year all loans are to be forgiven and all indentured servants are to be set free. On the three pilgrimage festivals - Pesah, Shavu’ot and Sukkot - we all should go to "see and be seen" before G-d in the Jerusalem.

 (chabad.org)

Haftara: Yesha’ayahu (Isaiah), 54:11-55:5

Haftit: “Aniya So’ara Lo Nuhamah…” Yesha’ayahu declares that Jerusalem will be rebuilt with gemstones like rubies and sapphires. All the Jerusalem’s children will be students of G-d and they will enjoy an eternal peace and spiritual greatness. Israel need not fear their enemies if they follow G-d’s commands. G-d offered eternal Covenant as Israel existence is G-d’s witness.

Connection to the Parasha: The haftara is the third of seven haftarot known as the “Seven of Consolation or Nehama.” This series starts after Tish’aa be’Av and run until Shabbat Shuva, the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah. During this time, concentration should be on repentance, improving one’s behavior, and spiritual uplifting. (Haftorahman)

K’tav Parasha - Re’eh

Parashat Re’eh continues with Moshe delivering his farewell speech to Bnei Yisrael in the Moab Plains across the Jordan. The parasha starts with a powerful verse: “רְאֵה אָנֹכִי נֹתֵן לִפְנֵיכֶם הַיּוֹם בְּרָכָה וּקְלָלָה - look, I give before you today a blessing and a curse.” This verse sums up the essence of our life: our option and need to make choices. If we choose the good, we will be blessed with goodness; and we don’t follow good ways, we will end up having unblessed life.

Each of the seven words contains a second layer of a deeper meaning. Moshe uses the verb “re’eh - look” which is close to that of “yir’ah,” meaning awe and respect. Moshe also prefers this verb over “sh’ma’ - listen,” as seeing with awe is more powerful than just listening.

The key point of “choice” is stressed out again with the change of speech from singular to plural. The sages wondered why the change from singular ‘re’eh” to plural “lifnekhem.” They explained that Moshe presented the blessing and curse to all Bnei Yisrael, but the choice is to be made individually by each one on us.

We have to make every day and every moment. Moshe knows that and uses the word “hayom - today” in his address to Bnei Yisrael. “Today” is possibly that very day that Moshe spoke to Bnei Yisrael, 3400 years ago. But “today” is also every day in our life, every moment, a beautiful renewable idea that enables us to make new and better and good choices every day.

This shabbat we enter the month of Elul, the month of rahamim and s’lihot, with shabbat Rosh Hodesh and its special Haftara reading. G-d forgives Bnei Yisrael their sins and misdeeds, and creates for them “הַשָּׁמַיִם הַחֳדָשִׁים וְהָאָרֶץ הַחֲדָשָׁה - a new heaven and new earth.” May each and every one of us have the wisdom to make good choices and transfer our deeds into a new realm, that of “a new heaven and new earth.”

Rega’ shel Ivrit - רגע של עברית

A spectrum (plural spectra or spectrums) is a condition that is not limited to a specific set of values but can vary, without steps, across a continuum (a continuous sequence). The word was first used scientifically in optics to describe the rainbow of colors in visible light after passing through a prism.

Spectrum has since been applied by analogy to topics outside optics, such the "spectrum of activity" of a drug, or the "autism spectrum", and of course the most common the "spectrum of political opinion."

The Academy of the Hebrew Language suggests the Hebrew word “Mikshetet -מִקְשֶׁתֶת“ which comes from keshet - a bow or rainbow.

At this time of tension, may we all respect all our family members and friends from all areas of the political spectrum - מרחבי המקשתת הפוליטית.
