Course Description

Health Science 1B  This semester of HS1 is Responding to Emergencies and focuses on emergency

Medicine, anatomy and physiology, and careers in prehospital care, ie, EMT, Paramedic, Firefighter, etc.

Students will have the opportunity to be certified in FA/CPR.

Grade: 11, 12

Length: 1 Year (2 semesters HS1A and HS1B)

*This is a CTE Course - 3 college credits

Prerequisite: None; for any students in grade 11, 12

Coursework

First Aid/CPR/AED Course Overview and Objectives

This course provides Citizen Responder training, according to American Red Cross standards, in respiratory and cardiac emergencies for adults, as well as the knowledge and skills necessary to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until professional medical services arrive. Course content and activities prepare the student to recognize emergencies and make appropriate decisions for first aid care. The American Heart Association, BLS (Basic Life Support) course will be included. (AHA is the certifying requirement for all Health Care workers.)

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate the following skills for an adult according to American Heart Association standards: checking the unconscious person, conscious choking, CPR, and AED.
  2. Utilize critical thinking skills to make decisions when a patient's condition changes.
  3. Identify and demonstrate proper skill sequencing according to American Red Cross standards.
  4. Identify and/or describe how to recognize and respond to emergencies, obtain consent, apply the Emergency Action Steps, and how to minimize the risk of disease transmission when giving care.
  5. Identify the signs, symptoms, and appropriate care of various injuries and sudden illnesses.
  6. Discuss considerations for giving care to special populations.
  7. Attend classes according to American Red Cross standards.                                      

Coursework Cont.

 Certification

In addition to the potential to earn college credit, students will have the opportunity to earn a BLS certification through the American Heart Association in Adult/Child/Infant CPR/AED (HSSRTE105 r.17).  In order to receive certification, students will need to pass ALL skill and written tests, including the final exam, with a letter grade of B (80%) or better.

Mt. Hood Community College Dual Credit

College credit is available through Mt. Hood Community College Dual Credit Program. This course is articulation with HE 252, First Aid: Responding to Emergencies. This course articulates in the Winter/Spring for 3 credits. Students must apply to the College Now Program and register during Winter/Spring Term to receive credit.  

 Professional skills: (5 points a day)

  •        Be ON TIME - in seat when bell rings - 1pt
  •        USE Restroom prior to class - 1pt
  •        CHECK IN PHONE - 1 pt
  •        PARTICIPATE  in class discussions and Hands on practice - 1pt
  •       Be Respectful (1pt)

     

Make up work and Late work policy:

   Late work and Make up work  is accepted until the day before progress reports or report cards.

  •   All grading will be done on a point system. Grades are assigned according to the scale below:

  • Assignments will be posted in Google Classroom.
  • Please bring your charged Chromebook to class every day!
  • Students will need a 1.0” Binder for daily notes, activities, diagrams, quizzes, etc.

About Me

  • This is my 28th year teaching in the David Douglas School District! I taught elementary for 19 years at Cherry Park and Gilbert Park. This is my 9th year at the high school
  • I was a Paramedic prior to becoming an educator.
  • I live in Sandy with my 3 daughters (2 in college, and 1 at Alice Ott)
